During the Italian GP weekend, Williams racing announced on Saturday that Alex Albon would not be taking part in any action during the weekend as he was diagnosed with appendicitis. It meant the Thai driver wasn’t physically capable of racing and had to be shifted to the hospital for surgery. The team needed to find a replacement for Albon.

Formula E world champion Nyck De Vries was in the F1 over the weekend as he was competing in Free Practice 1 with Aston Martin. It was revealed that he was having coffee in the Mercedes hospitality when he was informed about the news shortly before the public announcement was made. With Williams looking really strong the entire weekend, it must have been tough for Albon to digest.

With a bunch of drivers taking grid penalties, it effectively slotted Nyck De Vries and Nicolas Latifi in P8 and P10 effectively. Albon had shown crazy qualifying pace this season, though he could not have raced over the weekend.

Following surgery, Albon suffered post-operative anaesthetic complications. It led to respiratory failure, usually an uncommon complication. The Thai driver was put on a ventilator and transferred to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit). The team said that he made excellent progress that night and was taken off the ventilator. Albon was then transferred to the general ward and is expected to make a full recovery.

The update today is after undergoing surgery due to complications with his appendix, Alex Albon spent some time in intensive care. It was due to an unexplained complication that arose post op. Thankfully, he is in a stable condition and today the team told BBC Sport that Albon has been released from the hospital. He is already focused on the Singapore GP which will take place next month.

De Vries finished P9 in the Italian GP as he substituted for Albon. For a debut race, it was a very impressive result and that too in a Williams car. He has surely impressed the entire paddock wherein he also out-qualified Nicolas Latifi after being in the same car for just 1 practice session. This has led to speculation that the team might consider Nyck for a seat alongside Alex Albon next year.
