The NASCAR Cup Series race this Sunday will mark the return of Hendrick Motorsports veteran Alex Bowman. He was forced to sit out of the last four races, after he was diagnosed with vertigo following his COTA race retirement. The veteran has now gotten full clearance from the medical team to race again.

The No:48 team is still looking to make and impact in the 2026 season and having their star driver back will boost their confidence. But it won’t be easy at Bristol, as in the words of the driver, he is making his return in one of the most challenging and chaotic tracks in the schedule. Physically and mentally Bristol demands more from the racers owing to how the close the field will be.

Because they said I could. I mean, I’m a race car driver so if you tell me I’m clear, I’m going to go do it. Yeah, this is probably the worst place possible to come back to because it’s physical and extremely difficult. The margins from the front of the field to the back are tiny. You look at qualifying and every hundredth is multiple spots.

Alex Bowman said ahead of Bristol race.

Talking about the point, the veteran also admitted that one of the major challenges for him will be the qualifying, as the one-month break will make it hard for him be competitive in the track where Alex Bowman has always been solid. He produced an average qualifying, as he will start at raw 14, as the third best qualified HMS driver.

I haven’t qualified a car in a month so the expectation is that it’s going to be extremely difficult to contend at one of my best tracks, two of the last three poles here. I think those expectations probably change this weekend.

Alex Bowman credits HMS for his comeback

Further talking to the media in the same session, the veteran driver credited his team for helping him make the comeback. He highlighted how his sponsors and team played a key role behind the scene for him. The Ally sponsored driver also explained how he has solid crew at HMS that has had his back even after his massive struggles since 2022.

It just meant a lot to have everybody at HMS’s support and also everybody at Ally and Chevrolet and everybody that makes this deal possible, right. Like, I’ve put HMS in a tough spot multiple times now in the last, you know, five years or whatever it’s been since 2022. So yeah, they’ve probably given me more grace at times than I deserve. I’m super thankful for that and just ready to get back rolling.

Alex Bowman said.

Hendrick Motorsports president Jeff Andrews also talked to the media about the veteran. He highlighted how the comeback is testament to how good of an athletes Bowman is and highlighted the handiwork of the veteran racer.

I think it’s a testament to Alex and how hard he worked to be back a week early. These guys are athletes and there are no shortage of stories about how hard they work to overcome adversity and return from that earlier than expected. We’re proud to have him back and are ready to go racing and see where the points fall.

Jeff Andrews asserted.

HMS as a whole team is proud and excited about the veteran racer’s comeback. They have some momentum on their side with Chase Elliott’s win last week at Martinsville and it would be interesting to see how the No:48 is going take advantage of it.
