On Sunday, Alex Bregman was involved in a scary scene. During the game against the Cincinnati Reds, the Chicago Cubs star was struck in the face by a foul ball and left bloodied. He later shared a banged-up photo of himself on social media and thanked the fans for their prayers.

The incident took place in the 4th inning when the Cubs were up 5- 0. After Pete Crow-Armstrong and Seiya Suzuki popped out and flew out, Michael Busch came up to bat.

Bregman, whose single earlier in the game had given them a 1-0 lead, was standing on the on-deck circle, awaiting his potential chance. On a 1-2 count from Luis Mey, the ball fouled off Busch’s bat and hit Bregman in the face.

The former Houston Astros star immediately headed towards the dugout and covered his head with his hands. The trainers then pressed a towel to his face and helped him to the clubhouse. Slow-motion replays showed Bregman getting smacked on the left cheek.

Pinch-hitter Matt Shaw replaced him as he left the game. He was sent to a hospital for X-ray and CT scans. His team ended up winning 9-1 and took the series.

Bregman later shared an update. In his Instagram stories, he shared a picture of himself banged up. His eye was swollen, with some bruising and a pad in his nose to stop the bleeding. In the caption, he thanked the fans for their messages and expressed that he would be back.

Thanks for all the messages yall. I’ll be back

This freak accident occurred just a few days after there was another scary collision in the MLB. In the game between the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field last Thursday, 1st baseman Jared Young got smacked in the face by the knee of his pitcher, Nolan McLean, who was trying to field the ball.

The impact left Young motionless for a few seconds on the ground. He was later carted off the field and diagnosed with concussion symptoms.

For the Cubs, the blow to Bregman comes with just one week of regular season remaining. With an 87-69 record, they hold the top spot in the NL Wild Card standings. They will not want to lose their 3rd baseman for a long time with this injury.

While speaking with the reporters, his manager Craig Counsell claimed he had no major update regarding the test results yet. The 56-year-old simply said he and the others were waiting for a good report regarding him before moving to the next step.

We have to get good results from the hospital first. [Bregman] got hit in the face, so you are worried about his general well-being first. If we get a good report, we’ll move to the next step. I want to get a good report.

Craig Counsell said regarding Alex Bregman as per MLB.com

For the season, Bregman has played in 153 games. With a slash line of .262/.352/.452, he has hit 26 home runs and has 89 RBIs.

As for the Cubs, they will now return home and host the Miami Marlins. After that, they will travel to Boston and take on the Boston Red Sox in the final series.
