In Short
  • Carlos Alcaraz is sidelined due to a wrist injury sustained at the Barcelona Open.
  • Alex Corretja expressed uncertainty about Alcaraz's recovery in time for Wimbledon.
  • Adriano Panatta called for tennis authorities to address the rising injury rates among players.

Carlos Alcaraz is on the sidelines at present. He injured his wrist during the Barcelona Open, and as a consequence, he was forced to pull out of his second-round match against Tomas Machac.

He is not competing in the ongoing Madrid Open and will also not be playing at the Italian Open and the French Open, where last year, he defeated World No.1, Jannik Sinner. And now, Alcaraz’s compatriot and former ATP player, Alex Corretja, has cast doubt over the seven-time Grand Slam champion’s participation at Wimbledon. Spain’s Davis Cup director, Feliciano Lopez, also gave his reaction to Alcaraz’s injury.

I’m not sure he can return for Wimbledon. You’re never sure how the recovery will go. This injury requires maximum patience. You have to take it day by day, recover as best as possible. There can’t be a specific date. Maybe in a month and a half.

Alex Corretja told El Larguero on Cadena SER

Last year at Wimbledon, the Murica native failed to complete a three-peat, losing in four sets to Sinner. His opponent in the 2023 and 2024 Wimbledon finals was 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.

The wrist is a delicate subject. There are many tendons; a tennis player has to use it not at 100%, but at 200%. I’ve had this kind of injury before, and I know how complicated it is.

Feliciano Lopez said

Alcaraz has so far clinched two titles this year. After his Australian Open triumph over Djokovic, the World No.2 won his maiden Doha title against Arthur Fils. But he once again suffered exits before reaching the finals of the Indian Wells Masters and the Miami Open.

Also at the Monte-Carlo Masters, even though he reached the title clash, the defending champion suffered a straight-set defeat at the hands of Sinner. The defeat saw the Murcia native lose his No.1 ranking to the four-time Grand Slam champion.

Adriano Panatta makes his feelings known on Carlos Alcaraz’s injury

Adriano Panatta urged the tennis chiefs to do something so that players don’t fall victim to injuries after Carlos Alcaraz‘s wrist injury. The 75-year-old, also the 1976 French Open champion, said players will continue to get hurt if they don’t stop playing too much.

Everyone gets hurt here. I want to appeal to the institutions that regulate tennis: injuries are multiplying at a very worrying rate, and this is very bad news for this sport. The most striking case is obviously Alcaraz’s injury, which will keep him out until Queen’s Club, that is, after Roland Garros. The problem is that these players will all get hurt sooner or later, without exception. Today’s game is very violent and subjects these guys to inhuman physical strain.

Adriano Panatta said on Italian channel Rai 2

In the ongoing Madrid Open, Casper Ruud competed as the defending champion. He defeated Jack Draper last year. Alcaraz missed the home Masters 1000 event last year as well because of a right leg adductor injury.

Last year on the clay swing, the 22-year-old clinched titles at the Monte-Carlo Masters, Italian Open, and the French Open. In Monte Carlo, his opponent in the final was Lorenzo Musetti. Alcaraz also made the final of the Barcelona Open but failed to defeat Holger Rune.

While Alcaraz will be missing the chance to bid for a three-peat at Roland Garros, Sinner will be bidding to complete the Career Grand Slam. He made the final at Roland Garros for the first time last year, and despite a 2-0 lead and three championship points, he ended up losing the match. Sinner is currently competing in Madrid and went past Cameron Norrie in the fourth round.
