Australian tennis star Alex de Minaur has differentiated his matchups between World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz. The right-hander was speaking to the media after losing to Alcaraz in the Rotterdam final.
De Minaur considers Alcaraz a more suitable matchup for him compared to Sinner. Both De Minaur and Alcaraz are regarded as the fastest players on the ATP Tour.
Carlos is definitely a better match-up for me. I can rush him and hurt him a little bit more, making his life uncomfortable, a thing I didn’t manage to do with Jannik yet. Tennis is all about match-up: it doesn’t mean that because one guy’s ranked at a certain level and another one at a lowest level, the highest ranked is always going to win. There are styles that can hurt more – or less – certain players. I got close against Carlos today, it didn’t go my way but hopefully next time I’ll get it.
Alex de Minaur said in his post-match press conference (H/T: SMH)
De Minaur made an incredible comeback at the end of last season after suffering a hip injury at Wimbledon. He helped Australia reach the Davis Cup final, where they lost to Italy.
So far in 2025, he has maintained a strong position in the top 10. However, he has lost to both Sinner and Alcaraz this year. The Australian was defeated by Sinner earlier this season in the Australian Open quarterfinals.
Carlos Alcaraz makes history at Rotterdam Open
Carlos Alcaraz had a perfect debut at the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam. He won his first indoor title by defeating Alex de Minaur 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in the final. With this victory, he became the first Spanish player to win the tournament in its 52-year history.

De Minaur pushed Alcaraz into a third deciding set of the week with a strong comeback. However, the 21-year-old regained control and secured his 17th tour-level title in one hour and 54 minutes. Alcaraz has now won ATP 500 titles on clay, grass, hard, and indoor courts. He also leads his head-to-head record against De Minaur 3-0.
Alcaraz had lost in the Australian Open quarter-finals to Novak Djokovic last month. Now, he has bounced back with his first title of 2025. This is his first trophy since beating Jannik Sinner in the Beijing final last October.
De Minaur reached the Rotterdam final for the second year in a row. With this result, he will move up to No. 6 in the rankings on Monday. The 25-year-old was aiming for his 10th career title but could not stop Alcaraz’s strong finish in the final set.
