‘I still think he can compete’ – Alex Morono after beating Donald Cerrone at UFC Vegas 26
Alex Morono and Donald Cerrone
Alex Morono stepped in as the replacement fighter for the released Diego Sanchez. Sanchez was released just ahead of his fight against Donald Cerrone, which many even expected to be Sanchez’s farewell match. Morono was coming off a loss against Anthony Pettis, and was looking forward to getting back to winning ways.
Morono did get back to winning ways after a first round TKO victory against the experienced Cowboy. With the Cowboy aging and currently in a 6 fight skid (his last win came in 2018), talks him retiring have been raised.
Morono addressed this in a recent interview at the post-fight press conference, he said that Cerrone should be given the opportunity, at least one more fight. He also revealed how Cowboy ate some of his hardest kicks without pretty much getting rocked.
‘I hope he is given the opportunity to call his final shots‘ – Alex Morono
Morono was quoted as saying, “I do [think he can still compete]. At least one more. I hope he is given the opportunity to call his final shots.”
He continued, “I think he could have a fight if he wanted to and still succeed. When I throw that right hook, I throw every bit of power I can, and I think I landed two or three of them, and I put guys down with one, and he ate three of them pretty handily and stayed on his feet. He was still game. He had it in his eye.“
With that win Morono took his win tally in the UFC to eight. The former Legacy Fighting Championships’ welterweight champion does have the fire power to strike rich in the UFC.
As for Cerrone, it is back to the drawing board, he will have to think and ponder upon the idea of retiring from the sport of MMA. Or he needs to find a way back and go back to a winning mentality.
