It is indeed Summer in Canada! While the sun shines bright and yellow upon the nation, Summer McIntosh is busy in the Olympics earning one gold medal after another. The 17-year-old has thrived on the biggest stage in all of sports. She has earned 3 gold medals and 1 silver in the Paris Olympics.

Summer McIntosh showed up to win. She took the victory in the 200m butterfly, the 400m Individual Medley, and now the 200m Individual Medley. She beat Kate Douglass of the USA and Kaylee McKeown of Australia to take the gold. Alex Walsh, who appeared to win the bronze medal originally in the race, ended up facing a painful disqualification for an illegal backstroke-to-breaststroke turn as she was at the midway point of the race.

The officiating crew cited that Walsh had turned her body past vertical onto her stomach before she touched the wall. This ultimately resulted in her disqualification. It was unfortunate as she was in the lead for most of the race and continued to maintain the same at the final turn before Summer McIntosh turned up the jets and Kate Douglass surpassed her on the final stretch. There was still a shot for her to win the silver medal, that was until the officiating crew disqualified her.

The Paris Olympics has been a run that McIntosh will remember for the rest of her life. From beating her idol Katie Ledecky to win gold, to sending a statement that she has arrived, McIntosh delivered a cold statement to CBC Sports’ Devin Heroux as she said, “We’re literally just getting started.” The scary part is that she is absolutely true. McIntosh is a generational talent and her showing at Paris is nothing short of remarkable.

At this point, Summer McIntosh is displaying early signs of being the heir to Katie Ledecky. Even though the latter is not yet done with her swimming career, she continues to display excellence and skillfulness on the highest stage of swimming. With her most recent victory in the 200m Individual medley, McIntosh becomes Canada’s first triple gold medallist in the Olympics.

She continues to spearhead her country’s efforts to rack up medals in the pool at the Olympics. McIntosh set an Olympic-record time of 2:6.56 as she went on to secure her third gold medal. With her four-medal haul, McIntosh matches Penny Oleksiak’s record of four medals at the Summer Games. With the medley relay remaining on Sunday’s swimming finale, Summer has another shot to lead Canada to yet another podium finish. To the world, the Paris Olympics might be a landmark event but to Summer McIntosh, the Paris Games is a medium to announce the fact that she has arrived!
