Alexander Bublik would have booked a spot in the ATP Finals had he defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semifinals and later, Jannik Sinner, in the final of the Paris Masters. But the Kazakh ace found himself in a difficult position after he suffered a 7-6(3), 6-4 defeat at the hands of the Canadian ace.

Bublik made headlines throughout the previous week thanks to his controversial antics on the court. He did not shake hands with Alexei Popyrin in his first match after not being given an apology for a point off the net cord. Later, he reignited his feud with Corentin Moutet by punishing the Frenchman for his “send him home” comment.

Then, against Taylor Fritz in the fourth round, he told his team to “f**k off” because they instructed him to hit backhand winners. Against Auger-Aliassime, Bublik smashed his racket repeatedly and was destroyed in the second set.

Here’s the video:

When they changed the court, Auger-Aliassime couldn’t start his service games because there was still debris left on the court. The 25-year-old started to clean the court himself, only to receive thanks from Bublik, who sent a heart gesture to him.

The win has helped Auger-Aliassime take a 4-2 head-to-head lead against the Kazakhstani ace. It was also his second consecutive win this year following their Dubai clash.

Bublik, who has won four titles this season, will next be playing the Moselle Open and will lock horns with Alexander Blockx or Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The four titles that Sascha has lifted this year are: Halle Open, Swiss Open Gstaad, Austrian Open Kitzbuhel, and Hangzhou Open.

Felix Auger-Aliassime to play Jannik Sinner in the Paris Masters final

Felix Auger-Aliassime’s next match will be nothing but tough because he will be facing second seed Jannik Sinner, who breezed past defending champion Alexander Zverev 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals. Auger-Aliassime holds a 2-2 head-to-head record over Sinner.

We’re 2-2, but obviously, he’s the favorite in theory because I think we played a good match in New York. I believe it was good tennis. But still, he beat me. Obviously, the first times I won were before he became this Sinner. He has improved a lot since then.

The two matches that the World No.10 won were at the 2022 Madrid Open and the Cincinnati Masters fourth round. The 24-year-old won their last two encounters, in the Cincinnati Masters quarterfinal and the US Open semifinal this year.

But it’s always good to play against him. I feel like he demands from players a very, very strict tactical discipline and an almost perfect game execution to win. I have to be ready to play my best tennis and not make silly mistakes. So, I will try to do that and win tomorrow.

Felix Auger-Aliassime added

Before this year, the four-time Grand Slam champion had never reached the fourth round of the Paris Masters. While Auger-Aliassime is chasing his first Masters 1000 title (reached a final at the 2024 Madrid Open). This is the first time Auger-Aliassime has played a Masters 1000 semifinal this year.

Sinner will be playing his third Masters 1000 final this year, following the Italian Open and the Cincinnati Masters, losing both to Carlos Alcaraz. The last title of this category that Sinner lifted was at the Shanghai Masters.

Winning the Paris Masters will make Sinner once again a World No.1 player, dethroning Alcaraz. Auger-Aliassime, who has become a World No.8 in the live rankings, will reach the sixth spot if he denies Sinner his fifth title of the season. He is chasing his fourth title of the season, following wins in Adelaide, Open Sud de France, and the European Open.
