With the 2024 season coming to an end, the race for the year-end World No. 1 ranking is heating up. However, as it seems, Jannik Sinner has secured the top position with his title-winning performance at the US Open and a rummer-up finish at the China Open. Thus, Alexander Zverev has advised Carlos Alcaraz to not bother about the No. 1 position and to fight for the second spot with him.

On Wednesday (October 2), Aclaraz clinched the title in Beijing and reclaimed the second spot in the ATP rankings. Zverev, meanwhile, slipped one place to the third position. However, with three more tournaments lined up – the Shanghai Masters, the Paris Masters, and the ATP Finals – the German ace is fancying his chances to go past the Spaniard in the ATP rankings.

For me personally, it would be great to finish the year No. 2 in the world. I think the No. 1 spot is gone to Jannik, he made sure about it during the US Open. I think before the US Open it was quite open between Jannik, Carlos, and myself. I think finishing in the No. 2 spot and starting the year there would be amazing for me.

Zverev can play one additional tournament in Vienna. He has a 57–18 win-loss record this year and has won one title – the Italian Open – while he finished as the runner-up to Alcaraz at Roland Garros.

Alexander Zverev hoping to regain some form before season ends

Alexander Zverev looked back at his 2024 season and said that his form has been in patches. The year started well enough for him, as he won the title in Rome and reached the final in Paris before falling to Carlos Alcaraz.

At Wimbledon, the 27-year-old made it to the fourth round but an injury to his knee pulled him down. Zverev then could not defend his gold medal at the Paris Olympics and made a quarterfinal exit at the US Open. However, he teamed up with Alcaraz to win Team Europe’s fifth title at the Laver Cup.

You know, then, of course, the clay court season for me was great, winning Rome, making the finals of the French Open, of course a very bitter end to the end of the French Open, but that’s how it goes. I felt I was playing the best tennis of my life on grass court this year during Wimbledon until I got hurt…I definitely had a little bit of a drop off in level after the Olympics maybe a little bit, so I’m hoping I can get back to top form again.

The World No. 3 finds himself in the second half of the Shanghai Masters draw with Novak Djokovic. Zverev will start his campaign against Matia Ballucci or Billy Harris at the ATP 1000 tournament.
