In Short
  • Jannik Sinner won the Madrid Open final against Alexander Zverev, becoming the first man to win the first four Masters 1000 of the season.
  • Zverev stated there is a significant gap between Sinner and other players, including himself and Carlos Alcaraz.
  • Sinner currently leads the ATP rankings with 14,350 points, while Alcaraz is second with 12,960 points.

Alexander Zverev was no match for Jannik Sinner in the Madrid Open final, held on Sunday (May 3). Sinner scripted history after breezing past the German ace 6-1, 6-2, becoming the first man to win the first four Masters 1000 of the season.

The Italian has been etching his name in record books this season. After his defeat to eventual runner-up Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semifinal and to Jakub Mensik in the Qatar Open quarterfinal, Sinner completed the Sunshine Double by defeating Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells final and Jiri Lehecka in the Miami Open final.

This made Sinner the eighth man to complete the Sunshine Double. The four-time Major champion then upset defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the Monte-Carlo Masters final, becoming the second man after Djokovic to win the first three Masters 1000 of the season. Zverev, at the press conference after his defeat, said there’s a huge gap between Sinner and the rest of the field.

Well, I think there’s a big gap between Sinner and everybody else right now. It’s quite simple. I think there’s a big gap between Sinner and everybody else. And I think there’s a big gap between Alcaraz, myself, maybe Novak, and everybody else. I think there’s two gaps right now.

The last time Sinner lost a Masters 1000 match was in Shanghai last year. Cramps forced him to hand the walkover to Tallon Griekspoor in the third round, after which he lifted the Paris Masters.

It’s difficult to say that there’s not a gap between Sinner and everybody else if he hasn’t lost a match in how many Masters events? Since Shanghai. He hasn’t lost a match in almost nine months. I think you have to admit that there’s a gap between him and everybody else.

Alexander Zverev added

Zverev sits in the third spot in the rankings table with 5,805 points. This is the first time this season that the German has played a final. He has yet to win a title since the 2025 Munich Open, with his latest defeat being his ninth consecutive loss at the hands of the World No.1. Sascha now trails 4-10 in the head-to-head matchups against Sinner.

Jannik Sinner on whether he will play in Rome next

Jannik Sinner dethroned Carlos Alcaraz from the top of the rankings table after winning in Monte Carlo. He had no points to defend in the Sunshine Double events, Monte Carlo, and Madrid, so he gained a combined 4,000 points after winning these events.

At present, he sits on top with 14,350 points, while second-placed Alcaraz has 12,960. The Spaniard will continue to lose significant ranking points as he will be skipping the Italian Open and Roland Garros because of an injury he suffered during the Barcelona Open. Alcaraz won both these events last year by defeating the 24-year-old.

Because Sinner has been playing tennis without any break, he was asked at the press conference whether he is thinking of skipping the home tournament.

Playing at home is always very special. At the same time, now I want to enjoy this. I don’t want to think about future plans. Physically, I am fine. There is no reason not to play in Rome, of course, but I want to enjoy what I have achieved. It has been a very, very long tournament, and a very long stretch of tennis, starting from Indian Wells.

Sinner will be defending 1,950 points in the remaining two big events on clay. The Madrid title was his third title on the surface. Before this year, he had never progressed beyond the quarterfinals in the Spanish capital.
