Alexander Zverev believes Jannik Sinner has likely secured the year-end No. 1 spot. According to Zverev, the fight for No. 2 in the ATP rankings will be between himself and Carlos Alcaraz. Right now, Sinner is leading the Live Rankings by 4,000 points, with Alcaraz in second and Zverev just 135 points behind him.

There are still three major tournaments left this year. The Shanghai Open and the Paris Masters each offer 1,000 points to the winner. At the ATP Finals in Turin, an undefeated champion can win 1,500 points. Zverev thinks that Sinner has done enough to become the first Italian to end the year as the top player. Now, Zverev is aiming for the No. 2 spot.

For me personally it would be great to finish the year No.2 in the world. I think the No.1 spot is gone to Jannik, he made sure about it during the US Open. I think before the US Open, it was quite open between Jannik, Carlos, and myself. I think finishing in the No.2 spot and starting the year there would be amazing for me.

Sinner, Alcaraz, and Zverev have just three events remaining: Shanghai, Paris, and Turin. While Sinner is leading, he is not yet guaranteed the year-end No. 1 position.

Sinner will drop 1,680 points as the season wraps up, so there’s still a chance for him to be overtaken. Alcaraz is defending 500 points, while Zverev will lose 580 points from last year. This could still affect the final standings.

Alexander Zverev shares health update on his Shanghai Open return

German tennis star Alexander Zverev has revealed that his recent health issue was more serious than first thought, as he ended up in the hospital. He even considered ending his 2024 season early.

I have an inflammation in my lung. It’s going to take about two, three months to be completely gone. Why I pulled out of Beijing was because I was quite sick. I had quite a high fever during the Laver Cup and after the Laver Cup. I ended up in hospital. I didn’t feel great and just didn’t have the energy to play. I was on antibiotics for a week. I feel better now, but, of course, the issue with my lung is not gone, it’s still there.

Alexander Zverev said in his post-match press conference

The German player had a strong run in the North American hard-court events, reaching the semi-finals at the Cincinnati Open and the quarter-finals at both the US Open and Canada Open. He was highly disappointed after finishing another season without breaking his Grand Slam duck.

Zverev struggled during the Laver Cup, losing to Taylor Fritz in straight sets and also losing the doubles match with Carlos Alcaraz against Fritz and Ben Shelton. The two-time World Tour Finals champion bounced back on the final day, defeating Frances Tiafoe in a crucial win for Team Europe, but shortly after, he withdrew from the China Open due to pneumonia.

After spending a week recovering, Zverev has decided to return to the Shanghai Masters. He admits he hasn’t fully recovered yet. Despite his illness, he chose to continue competing rather than take the rest of the season off, even though his ranking will drop to No. 3 after missing the China Open.
