Alexander Zverev flew into a rage and argued with the chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani during his tense third-round match against Tallon Griekspoor at the Shanghai Masters on October 8. Zverev won the match with a scoreline of 7-6(8-6), 2-6, 7-6(7-5).
Just an hour before Frances Tiafoe hurled abuse at the chair umpire after his third-round defeat to Roman Safiullin, Zverev questioned Lahyani’s decision. The two-time Grand Slam finalist was chasing a ball and when he finally returned it, Lahyani and later TV replays confirmed that the ball bounced twice, after which, Zverev started to argue with the umpire. When Lahyani tried to explain to the German, the latter completely lost his cool and swore at him.
Zverev also told the umpire about what happened during Stan Wawrinka‘s match and the controversy after Tiafoe’s third-round loss. During the Swiss veteran’s match against Flavio Cobolli, umpire Carlos Bernardes, called the score wrong.

Sky Sports commentator reminds Alexander Zverev that he’s not above the rules
Alexander Zverev drew mostly negative reactions from fans and pundits after his outburst. Sky Sports commentator Colin Fleming condemned Zverev’s act, calling the entire thing ridiculous.
The 27-year-old’s fourth-round opponent is David Goffin. The match, which is scheduled for October 10, will be their seventh encounter on the ATP Tour. Zverev has won four matches, including the last match they played in the Round of 64 of the 2024 French Open.
The 2nd seed is searching for his second title of the season after winning the Italian Open in May. Before the Shanghai Masters, Zverev played for Team Europe in the Laver Cup. He kick-started his campaign in Shanghai with a match against Mattia Bellucci, followed by his clash with Tallon Griekspoor.
