World No.6, Alexander Zverev has made the quarterfinals of the ongoing Madrid Masters and will take on top seed Rafael Nadal at Caja Magica today. The German got through in straight sets over Dan Evans in the round of 16.

The 24-year-old has experienced a turbulent season thus far. After winning the title early in the year in Acapulco, he prematurely exited the tournament in Monte Carlo. In the following week, he even failed to make any impact at his home tournament in Munich.

Zverev is a former champion at the Spanish capital, when he won the title in 2017 defeating Dominic Thiem, and is very much capable of playing on the clay. As the US-Open runner-up gets ready to face the World No.1 today, he sounded pretty confident about his chances against the Spaniard.

Speaking to the ATP tour website, Zverev said, “I have beaten Rafa Nadal the last few times, but when you beat him a few times in a row he’s going to be more motivated to beat you. He is the favourite.”

Although Zverev has beaten Nadal in their previous two meetings, he is yet to beat the 20-time Grand Slam winner on the dirt. After the exit of several top seeds in Daniil Medvedev, Diego Schwartzman and Stefanos Tsitsipas, all eyes will be on Nadal, Zverev and Dominic Thiem.

Zverev and Nadal are scheduled to play the second match at Manuel Santana. The match will start approximately around 6.30pm IST.
