In Short
  • Alexander Zverev aims to overcome Jannik Sinner in the Miami Open semifinals after losing their last six encounters.
  • Zverev has dropped only one set in four matches at the Miami Open, showcasing strong form.
  • Sinner is on a 10-match winning streak and seeks to complete the Sunshine Double by winning both Indian Wells and Miami.

Former World No.2 Alexander Zverev is seeking to reach his first final of the season at the Miami Open, but for him to do that, he will have to get past Jannik Sinner on the court in the semi-final. He has revealed that he has learned from his lessons against the Italian star at the Indian Wells Open two weeks ago.

Zverev has dropped just one set in his four matches at the Miami Open and looks to be playing his best tennis. He defeated Francisco Cerundolo 6-1, 6-2 in the quarter-finals on Thursday (March 26) and had defeated Quentin Halys in the round of 16 after battling past former US Open champion Marin Cilic.

However, Zverev has not beaten Sinner since the 2023 season. He dominated their head-to-head record for three years on tour, but since 2024, there has been a shift in dominance. Sinner has won all six of their meetings in two years, including the Indian Wells semi-finals, where he crushed the 28-year-old 6-2, 6-4.

The last time Zverev came close to pushing Sinner on the court was at the Vienna Open, where a slight mistake led to the Italian star winning the match in three sets. Zverev had won the first set but couldn’t maintain the momentum as the match went on. He will be aiming not to make any mistakes this time around.

During his press conference ahead of his clash against Sinner at the Miami Open, he was asked what he would be aiming to change to get his first win in years over the Italian star. The German star noted that he made some mistakes in their meeting in the Indian Wells Open, and he’s aiming not to repeat them on March 27 at the Hard Rock Stadium Court:

We’ve had very good matches in recent years, very close matches in the past few months. It’s true that he has won them all, so I hope that this time there will be a different outcome. In Indian Wells, I played a poor match, the shot that failed me the most was the serve, that day I served terribly, so I hope that this changes tomorrow. I hope to do the best I can.

Zverev will face a tough test against Sinner, who has not dropped a set at the Miami Open. The Italian star recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win over Frances Tiafoe in the quarter-finals, a day after beating Alex Michelsen and he’s the favorite to win the challenge. Sinner is currently on a 10-match winning streak on tour and just two matches from completing the Sunshine Double.

Jannik Sinner still hungry for more titles and records after claiming several of them

Jannik Sinner made his breakout on tour in 2024, winning eight titles, including two Grand Slams. Since then, he has been in the top 2 of the men’s rankings and has cemented his place as one of the best players of his generation. Additionally, he has broken several records on tour and made his own.

He has the opportunity to become the first man since Roger Federer in 2017 to complete the Sunshine Double – winning the Indian Wells Open and the Miami Open. He’s the favorite to accomplish the feat as he has not lost a Masters 1000 match since October. During his press conference, Sinner admitted that he remains hungry for a title even after winning many of them:

To be hungry [for more success], I think is quite natural. Mentally you have to stay calm and be relaxed also off the court, because I played a lot of tennis in the past three or four weeks with all the practice sessions and everything. I’m trying to keep going. I know this is my last tournament on hard courts before going on clay, so I’m very happy to make the semis again.

Sinner has only lost to a few players on tour since 2024, and only his arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz has defeated him six times on the court. The Italian star’s consistent performance on the court has made him one of the best players currently in the men’s circuit. Should he win the French Open in May, he will complete the Career Grand Slam.
