During the first few days at the US Open, the biggest talk of the town is surrounding Carlos Alcaraz and his new haircut. The Spaniard was seen in his normal hair during the mixed doubles schedule. However, he debuted his bald look during the first round in the singles format against Reilly Opelka.
The hairstyle has generated a lot of buzz amongst his tennis colleagues, including Alexander Zverev. The 2020 US Open finalist claims that he was training alongside Coco Gauff before they witnessed Alcaraz’s hairstyle. Their reaction was similar to everyone else. Zverev said in an interview to Sky Sports Germany:
I was training next to Coco, and we both looked at each other at first and couldn’t believe our eyes. For 50 million euros, I’d have the same haircut as him. And no, you don’t need to donate for that. Really, you don’t need to (laughs).
Alcaraz is the man to beat at this year’s US Open, having recently won the Cincinnati Open. The Spaniard won his first and only US Open in 2022, where he beat Casper Ruud in the final. Zverev will be hoping for another shot at his maiden Grand Slam title. The German lost in the 2020 final at Flushing Meadows, and has finished runners-up in two other Grand Slam finals since.
Alexander Zverev begins US Open bid
German tennis star Alexander Zverev was the last player to book his spot in the US Open second round, but he sees it as just the beginning of a bigger goal. On Tuesday night, his match was delayed after Coco Gauff’s three-set battle, yet he kept his composure. In the early hours of Wednesday morning, he closed out a 6-2, 7-6(4), 6-4 victory over Alejandro Tabilo.

The German is one of six past finalists in this year’s field and carries the memory of painful defeats. His closest chance came at the 2020 US Open, where he let slip a two-set lead and lost to Dominic Thiem in a fifth-set tie-break. Zverev has since admitted that the match was one he should have won.
More opportunities have followed, but the major title has still eluded him. He fell to Carlos Alcaraz in five sets at Roland Garros last season, and to Jannik Sinner in the Australian Open final earlier this year. Those two young stars have gone on to claim the last seven majors between them, highlighting the challenge Zverev faces.
If he is to finally lift a Grand Slam trophy in New York, he may need to beat both men in succession. Seeded to meet Sinner in the semi-finals and Alcaraz in a potential final, Zverev knows the road is demanding. For now, though, his attention stays on the second round, where he faces Jacob Fearnley, a player he has already defeated twice this season.
Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz give update on their schedule post US Open
There won’t be a Jannik Sinner versus Carlos Alcaraz showdown at this year’s China Open, as both players have chosen different tournaments during the Asia swing. The two stars delivered a memorable final in Beijing last year, with Alcaraz edging Sinner in a three-set thriller to claim the title.

That clash marked the start of a strong run of finals between them. Since then, they have faced off four more times, all in championship matches. Alcaraz came out on top in three of those, including Roland Garros, while Sinner struck back with a win at Wimbledon. The Spaniard now leads their head-to-head 9–5.
This year, however, they won’t cross paths in Beijing. Alcaraz has decided to make his debut at the Japan Open in Tokyo, while Sinner will return to China for the third straight season. Their separate schedules mean fans will have to wait for their next meeting.
After these events, both players are set to reunite in Shanghai for the penultimate Masters 1000 of the season. They are also expected to compete at the Paris Masters before closing out their campaigns at the ATP Finals in Turin.
