World No. 2 Alexander Zverev shed many tears after losing the Australian Open final to Jannik Sinner. The German suffered his third Grand Slam final defeat on Sunday, following earlier losses at the 2020 US Open and the 2024 Roland Garros.

After the match, Sinner consoled Zverev and encouraged him to bounce back. That advice seems to have worked, as the German was later seen joking with the World No. 1 while they were leaving Australia on the same plane.

Alexander Zverev said on his Instagram story

Sinner showed great sportsmanship after the final, helping Zverev cope with the tough loss. The top seed even apologized to Zverev’s girlfriend and embraced his father in the locker room.

Zverev now shifts his focus to Roland Garros, where he will aim for his first Grand Slam title. He lost in a five-set final to Carlos Alcaraz in Paris last year.

Alexander Zverev’s prize money revealed after the Australian Open

Alexander Zverev fell short in the Australian Open final on Sunday, January 26, losing to Jannik Sinner in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. It was Zverev’s second Grand Slam final loss, as he continues his search for a maiden Grand Slam title. Sinner, meanwhile, became the first player since Rafael Nadal in 2006 to successfully defend his first Grand Slam title.

Despite the loss, Zverev earned A$1.9 million in prize money, equivalent to about US$1.2 million or INR 9.6 crore. Women’s singles runner-up Aryna Sabalenka also earned the same amount after losing to Madison Keys in the final on January 25. Keys, the women’s champion, won A$3.5 million, the same as Sinner.

Sinner’s title defense was dominant, and he took home A$3.5 million, equal to US$2.2 million or INR 17.5 crore. His victory over Zverev was another highlight in his incredible rise, following his maiden Grand Slam win at the Australian Open in 2024, where he defeated Daniil Medvedev.

The semi-finalists in both events also earned significant payouts. In the men’s singles, Novak Djokovic and Ben Shelton reached the last four. For the women’s event, Iga Swiatek and Paula Badosa made it to the semi-finals before being eliminated. Each semi-finalist received A$1.1 million, which is about US$690,000 or INR 5.9 crore.
