World No. 7 Alexander Zverev is enjoying an outstanding season, making his first-ever Grand Slam semifinal and final at the Australian Open and the US Open respectively. He also capped it off by winning two titles at Cologne, in his home country. Off the court, however, his matters are gradually getting murkier by the day.

The latest of these blows has been the accusation of domestic abuse by Olga Sharypova, an ex-girlfriend of the German tennis star.

Olga Sharypova has been a junior tennis player in the past and has a decent fan following on social media. She dated Zverev for quite some time, but they broke up in 2019.

Since then, Zverev has gone on to date Brenda Patea, a German model. While they have broken up (in August this year), she recently announced that she was pregnant with their child. Irreconcilable differences might’ve soured their relationship to such an extent that she also made it clear that she wasn’t going to share custody of the child.

And now, Olga has come forward with a vivid account of her experience with Zverev in New York. She initially kept mum because she didn’t want to hurt Zverev’s image as she had loved him for so long. But now, she decided to speak up about the domestic abuse she faced, possibly during the 2019 US Open.

A fan provided the translated version of the post, clearing all doubt of the serious nature of her confession.

Despite not being directly named in the post, people were able to connect it to the German tennis star because of the on-off nature of their relationship. However, in an interview with Championat, a Russian website, Olga confirmed that she was indeed talking about Zverev, her ex-boyfriend.

Zverev locked her out of hotel room, threw out her luggage

In the interview, Olga described the one-year-old incident in vivid detail. She had got back from a walk in New York with her friend Dasha Medvedev (Daniil Medvedev’s wife), after which Zverev allegedly abused her physically in a rage. He also locked her out of their hotel room, throwing out her luggage onto the hotel corridor. She also said that he choked her, and she wasn’t able to breathe at a point of a time during the incident.

Olga also shared a few screenshots of her talk with a friend, who also took the liberty of photographing her luggage strewn out on the hotel floor.

She claimed that this incident in New York wasn’t the only one, with instances happening many times throughout their relationship. However, it was one of the last straws for her, as they broke up soon after.

Olga clarified that she wanted to bring this incident to light for long, but stopped out of respect for her ex-boyfriend. She also added that her reveal was coincidental with that of Brenda Patea, putting the pin of the coincidence on karma. Calling for accountability, he said, “I was going to tell about it. And I wanted to do it for a long time. It just so happened that it was on this day that two of his ex-girlfriends made loud statements. Boomerang returned to him today. For each of their actions, people must be responsible: whether it is a child or violence.”

To prove the authenticity of her allegation, she also appeared ready to undergo “any tests, including a lie detector” for them to be proven correct.

Zverev hasn’t released a statement yet

While the German world no. 7 has kept mum for now, he will find it difficult to defend such serious allegations, where the account has been provided as vivid as this.

Moreover, in the time of #MeToo, these allegations will be particularly hurtful towards his image as a person and a professional tennis player.

That said, as with any allegations of this sort, ‘Sascha’ is innocent until proven guilty, so he will look to build a defense and navigate this situation in the best way possible. The Next Gen star will find his entire hard work on the court erased in a flash if they do in fact turn out to be true.

The times have changed, and with oppressed voices finally being heard, it is high time to clear out the society of wrongdoers. The justice system must ensure that this case is dealt with fairly and with full transparency.
