Before the 2025 Australian Open, Jannik Sinner participated in an exhibition event. He locked horns with local man Alexei Popyrin and beat him 6-4, 7-6. The Italian will play another exhibition match on Friday against Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Popyrin, after his defeat to Sinner, was asked about the two-time Grand Slam champion’s impressive feat of 73 wins last year. Sinner finished the 2024 season with eight titles, including the Australian Open and the US Open. He registered 73 wins and suffered just six defeats, half of which were to rival Carlos Alcaraz.
The World No.1 became the first player to register 70 wins since three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray achieved the feat in 2016. Popyrin lauded Sinner for having one of the most impressive seasons and while doing so, he joked about his own stats.
Popyrin also had a decent season last year, for he clinched his first Masters 1000 title with a straight-set win over Andrey Rublev at the Canadian Open. The World No. 25 also progressed to the third round at Wimbledon and the fourth round at the US Open.
Matteo Berrettini backs Jannik Sinner to win 2025 Australian Open
Following the two exhibition matches, Jannik Sinner will set his eyes on the Australian Open which he wants to lift for the second time in a row. Compatriot Matteo Berrettini, who was part of the Davis Cup team that lifted the title last year, backed the youngster to win defend the title in Melbourne.
Berrettini also thinks the ‘field is strong’ because Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic will also be participating. While Alcaraz has never reached the semifinal at the Australian Open, the 24-time Grand Slam champion will be chasing his 11th title in Melbourne.
Last year, Sinner came from two sets down to beat Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final. Alcaraz, on the other hand, suffered a four-set defeat to Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals. Djokovic was denied his 25th Major by Sinner when he beat the Serb in four sets in the semifinals.
