Spanish women’s team star Alexia Putellas scored a stunning 85th minute goal in a narrow 1-0 win over Nigeria, at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The win propelled La Roja to six points, maintaining their lead in Olympic women’s football Group C.
The world’s number one ranked footballing nation is one of the favorites to win the Olympics gold medal this summer. Making their debut appearance, the Spanish team secured a 2-1 victory over Japan in their first match. Their win against Nigeria has now ensured the World Cup champions a spot in the Olympic quarterfinals. Spain leads Group C with six points and is set to face third-placed Brazil in Bordeaux next.
In what was a rather close match, the La Rojas edged past Nigeria thanks to a late goal from vice-captain Alexia Putellas. The Super Falcons showcased impressive defensive tactics, maintaining a 0-0 score until the 85th minute. However, Putellas’ exceptional free kick sealed the match for the Spaniards. She scored from nearly 30 yards out, as her shot sailed past the goalkeeper into the corner of the net. Moreover, Spain dominated play throughout the match.
