Aljamain Sterling has confirmed that he will not be fighting the title rematch against Petr Yan for now. The UFC Bantamweight champion was scheduled to fight the former champion Yan soon, but injury problems to Aljamain Sterling has caused the rematch to be postponed. Sterling revealed on Friday that he will not be fighting anytime soon.
At UFC 259 Aljamain Sterling went up against then Bantamweight champion, Petr Yan. That event created history as it was the first time a fighter turned champion due to the opponent’s disqualification. The fight was called off after Petr Yan threw a knee to Sterling’s face when he was down to the floor.
The fans and spectators weren’t happy with the situation. Many fans believe that Aljamain Sterling faked his pain to escalate the DQ and help him win the belt. Still today, fans call Sterling a “paper champion”. After the controversy, UFC President, Dana White suggested that both the fighters will fight in the title bout very soon.
Things seemed to have taken another turn as ESPN has reported that Aljamain will be out for some time now and won’t be able to fight. The fighter is scheduled to have a neck surgery next week in LA, which is expected to keep the fighter out for at least October. This brings a huge problem for the promotion’s Bantamweight division.
Aljamain Sterling to be out for at least 5 months according to reports
Aljamain Sterling on Friday revealed that he will have to undergo neck surgery. According to ESPN, the doctors have diagnosed the champion with a herniated disc and will operate C6-C7. “They told me I will heal in three months and can start doing cardio to get myself ready,” Sterling said.
“They wouldn’t want to see me take a fight until they see everything has fused in my neck correctly. Five months would be ideal if I heal up really quick.” Aljamain has confirmed that he can not fight for five months at least and will begin training only from September. Aljamain also spoke to Petr Yan knowing how disturbed the Russian must be.
“For the dummies saying he’s out for 9 months and the losers who says he’s faking shit. See you in October Peanut Butter Pan,” Sterling tweeted. “Sincerely your champ, suck it and life goes on.”
