Following their opening night defeat to the Oklahoma City Thunder, all eyes were on Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night. They locked horns with Amen Thompson and the Houston Rockets in what became one of the best games of the season so far.

It was a neck-and-neck battle between two sides looking to contend for the championship this season. In the end, the Rockets sealed a nail-biting 114-110 victory over the Spurs at the Moody Center to register their second win in two games.

However, the biggest highlight of the game came late in the fourth quarter. With one final play for the chance to tie or take the lead, Wembanyama got the ball in the post. Many expected him to score as he was guarded by the smaller Thompson.

But Thompson pulled off one of the most insane defensive plays. He leaped up and blocked the 7’4″ center at the rim. The play was met with loud cheers in the arena.

The matchup between Victor Wembanyama and Thompson saw two top picks from the 2024 NBA Draft class. Wembanyama entered the league with immense hype and potential as the number one pick, while Thompson was picked by the Rockets as the fourth overall pick.

Both young stars are seen as the future of their respective franchises as the French star signed a five-year extension with the Spurs. Similarly, Thompson was rewarded with a five-year contract extension as well.

Kevin Durant hailed Amen Thompson for his game-winning block

Kevin Durant is undoubtedly the best player and the veteran of the Rockets’ locker room; however, Amen Thompson is the team’s defensive engine. The 23-year-old has shown significant improvements on the offensive end as well in the past year.

It took something special from Thompson at 6’7″ to block Wembanyama at 7’4″. After the game, Durant praised his teammate and labeled him as a “freak athlete”.

Wemby caught the ball and just thought he’d be tall man and just try to rise over top but twin is just a freak athlete. It’s insane how he got up so quick to block that shot against a 7’5” guy being 6’7”. What a game saving block.
