The Sunshine Double tournaments this year saw new champions. It was neither Carlos Alcaraz nor Jannik Sinner, the two players who have dominated in the United States in recent years.

Sinner, who was the defending champion in this year’s Miami Open, has so far played just the Australian Open as he is serving his three-month doping ban and cannot play in ATP-sanctioned events till May 4. Alcaraz was bidding to complete a three-peat at Indian Wells but eventual winner Jack Draper upset him in the semifinals in three sets.

The Spaniard then shockingly suffered a three-set defeat to David Goffin in his first match of the Miami Open. In the final, 19-year-old Jakub Mensik denied Novak Djokovic his seventh Miami Open title by clinching a straight-set win. While analyzing Men’s tennis, Andrea Petkovic suggested that anyone can win a tournament without the two young Grand Slam champions.

I will say it as it is, Men’s tennis is in an existential crisis. I am sorry, I have to say it, it’s true. Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz kept a veil in front of our eyes. The reason I say that is that the moment they are gone, you can see that it is absolute carnage. Sinner is not there, he’s suspended, and Alcaraz lost early, and you can throw a dart blindfolded at a dartboard and see what sticks.

Petkovic called the change simply a generational shift which is not a “bad” thing, and compared the Men’s tour with that of the WTA. She claimed ATP Tour won’t see a change until Sinner comes back to the same level he had before the ban or Alcaraz solves his consistency problem.

Andrea Petkovic analyzes Novak Djokovic’s level

At the Miami Open, Novak Djokovic advanced to his first tour-level final since last year’s Shanghai Masters but he once again failed to take home his 100th title. Jakub Mensik scripted history by sinking the Serb, becoming the first Czech player to claim a Masters 1000 title since Tomas Berdych in 2005.

Djokovic will turn 38 this May and the biggest opponents at this stage of his career are injuries. Andrea Petkovic, while commenting on the situation of men’s tennis, suggested that Djokovic is not a favorite in every tournament he plays.

Novak is still incredible when he is fit, but he gets injured now. Novak is older now, so you can’t count on him being healthy for two weeks at a long tournament.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion suffered a hamstring injury at this year’s Australian Open and withdrew from the semifinals. It was an injury that forced him to pull out of last year’s French Open quarterfinal against Casper Ruud as well.

Andrea Petkovic thinks Jack Draper will struggle at Wimbledon

Jakub Mensik, en route to the title, knocked out Jack Draper in the second round. As per Andrea Petkovic Draper will not be a favorite at Wimbledon. She pointed out how on a fast court of Grandstand, the Czech ace rushed Draper’s backhand and forehand because he has a heavy spin.

So that’s why I think he will have more trouble at Wimbledon than other places, but do I think he can win a major title? Absolutely.

The 23-year-old hasn’t yet progressed to the third round of Wimbledon. Last year, he fell in straight sets to compatriot Cameron Norrie in the second round. He produced his best performance at a Grand Slam event when he reached the semifinals of last year’s US Open.
