Donald Trump attended the men’s US Open final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, and because of his presence, the “mood was completely dead“, according to former WTA player Andrea Petkovic. The German ace, during an interview with the Becker Petkovic podcast, said that although she is not a political person, what frustrated her the most was that she was distracted from tennis.
Sinner and Alcaraz clashed for the fifth time this season, including the third straight time in Grand Slam finals. The Italian suffered a five-set defeat to the Spaniard at the French Open but was successful in denying a three-peat to Alcaraz at Wimbledon.
At the US Open, Sinner took the second set off him – it was the first time Alcaraz dropped a set in the tournament. But that was all the damage Sinner could do as Alcaraz quickly shifted the gears, and in nearly three hours, he ended the US Open in his favor for the second time in his career (the first was in 2022 by defeating Casper Ruud).
Watching from the stands was Trump, whose reaction after Alcaraz’s win made a lot of headlines. Because of his visit to Flushing Meadows, women’s US Open champion Aryna Sabalenka was told to leave the premises and celebrate somewhere else after her win over home favorite Amanda Anisimova because the Secret Service was checking everything at the venue. What bothered Petkovic the most was the empty stadium during the men’s final.
The stadium was half empty for the first set, and the mood, I don’t know if it was broadcast on television, but I was in the stadium, and the mood was completely dead. And it had nothing to do with Carlos and nothing with Jannik, but everyone was busy with other things. Everyone was looking at their phones, refreshing the news all the time to see why the stadium was empty.
The win helped Alcaraz increase his head-to-head lead over Sinner to 10-5. Alcaraz also reclaimed his No.1 spot as the four-time Grand Slam champion dropped to the No.2 spot. Sinner couldn’t defend the five titles he lifted last year.
Jim Courier on what the rest of the ATP players are thinking after the US Open final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner
Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have clearly separated themselves from the rest of the tour as they have split the last eight Grand Slam titles between them. The last player to clinch a Major trophy was Novak Djokovic, who did it so at the 2023 US Open, but the 24-time Grand Slam champion lost thrice to Alcaraz and Sinner in the semifinals of this year’s Major.

According to former ATP player Jim Courier, the rest of the players would be thinking about how they would be able to surpass them by making a great deal of improvements in their game. But Courier is also convinced that the World No.1 and World No.2 will continue to work on their games to stay ahead in the competition. He told Clay:
The rest will be thinking about how much more they need to improve, and that’s exactly what inspired Novak to reach his great heights. Whether it’s one of the guys already on tour or maybe a junior, they’ll be watching and working hard to catch them.
Next is the China Open, which is scheduled to start on September 24. Last year in the tournament, the six-time Grand Slam champion defeated Sinner to win his career’s first title on the Asian swing. Last year in Asia, the 24-year-old clinched the Shanghai Masters by defeating Djokovic.
