Alexander Zverev‘s hope of winning his first Grand Slam title was crushed by Jannik Sinner. In the 2025 Australian Open final, Zverev played probably his worst match of this tournament as Sinner took less than three hours to clinch a straight-sets win.

Former player and the World No.2’s compatriot Andrea Petkovic felt bad seeing Zverev following the defeat. The German ATP pro was inconsolable and even Sinner tried to allay the pain by consoling him.

You couldn’t help but feel for the guy. He looked absolutely and utterly crushed.

Before Sinner, Zverev was defeated by Carlos Alcaraz and Dominic Thiem in the final of the 2024 French Open and the 2020 US Open, respectively. Former World No.9 Petkovic claimed Zverev has made a lot of improvement on his game but in front of Sinner, it wasn’t enough.

He hit the ball bigger than he had all tournament long, 10 kmh faster in fact, he stood closer to the baseline. He made 81% first serves in the first set. And yet. And yet and yet and yet. It wasn’t enough.

Zverev still edges Sinner 4-3 in their head-to-head encounter. Before facing the World No.1, he received a walkover from an injured Novak Djokovic in the semifinal.

The win over Zverev has made the Italian the first player since the 24-time Grand Slam champion to win three consecutive hard-court Major tournaments, following the 2024 Australian Open and the 2024 US Open.

John Isner reveals he didn’t like what Alexander Zverev said after defeat

As Alexander Zverev lost his third Grand Slam final, he was very self-deprecating during his runner-up speech. Former World No.8 John Isner, who retired in 2023, was not a fan of what the 27-year-old had said.

Sascha’s quote after the match, and this is a tough one to read out was, ‘I am just not good enough. I don’t know if I will ever be able to lift the trophy but I will keep trying’. I like the end of that quote. I didn’t love the beginning.

John Isner said on Nothing Major podcast

Isner observed that in spite of Zverev’s five-set defeat in the 2024 French Open final, he recovered ‘very well from it’ and wants to see how Zverev moves on this time.

Zverev has now reached the summit clashes of three Grand Slam events: the Australian Open, the French Open, and the US Open. At the Wimbledon, he has never made it beyond the fourth round. Last year as well, he was defeated by Taylor Fritz in five sets in the fourth round.
