Carlos Alcaraz moved one step closer to his first indoor title at the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam. On Thursday night, he delivered a dominant performance against Andrea Vavassori. The top seed won 6-2, 6-1 in the second round. Vavassori admitted that he felt like he was “hit by a train.”
Alcaraz, recovering from illness and wearing a breathing aid, started strong. He broke Vavassori’s serve in the first game. The first set ended 6-2 after Vavassori sent a forehand wide. The Spaniard continued his momentum in the second set.
With the match that is taking place and with such a large crowd, you feel a bit like being hit by a train and it is difficult to stay in the match. I am not used to playing singles and it showed in this match. I could have played a few more games, but winning against this Alcaraz is really difficult. On the court, he was really ‘on fire’, well done, there is not much to say really. And then off the court he remains a very special boy: I know him well since the Challengers, he is a very good boy and he is one of the few who always greets everyone with a smile.

He broke again early in the second set, winning the third game with a perfect lob. Another break came soon after when Vavassori double-faulted. Alcaraz sealed the victory with a strong forehand return. His shot forced an error from Vavassori.
With this win, Alcaraz moved into the quarterfinals. He faced fellow Spaniard Pedro Martinez next, and beat him in straight sets as well. Martinez shocked Holger Rune, the fifth seed, with a 6-4, 6-1 victory. The winner of their match will advance to the semifinals.
Carlos Alcaraz’s potential on indoor hard courts
World No.3 Carlos Alcaraz has been outstanding on grass and clay courts. He has won 88.9% of his matches on grass, with a 24-3 record. On clay, he has an 81.8% win rate, winning 81 out of 99 matches. These numbers show his dominance on these surfaces.

On hard courts, Alcaraz has a solid record of 108 wins and 36 losses. This gives him a 75% win percentage. His overall career win rate stands at 78.9%, placing him ninth in ATP Tour history. However, his performance indoors is not as strong.
So far, he has played 37 indoor matches and won 25 of them. His 67.6% win rate is lower than his numbers on other surfaces. Compared to rivals like Novak Djokovic (79.8%) and Jannik Sinner (78.4%), Alcaraz has room for improvement.
One major concern is his lack of titles indoors. He has never won an indoor tournament. In fact, he has yet to even reach a final on this surface.
