‘Champion!’ Andrey Rublev storms past Andy Murray to win the Mubadala World Tennis Championship

Andrey Rublev with the 2021 Mubadala World Tennis Championship

World No.5 Andrey Rublev has had a fairly decent season and ended it on a high note by winning the Mubadala World Tennis Championship on Saturday. The top seeded Russian defeated 3-time grand slam champion Andy Murray in the final in straight sets 6-4,7-6(2).

Rublev was exceptional all season and entered the final in Abu Dhabi after beating Denis Shapovalov in three sets 7-6(5),3-6,6-4. He looked on song in the final right from the very beginning and gave Murray on opportunity to dominate. Right from the very beginning, he took charge from the baseline and served well. He just needed one break of serve to wrap up the first set 6-4.

Murray looked a much better player in the second set. He was better prepared for Rublev’s groundstrokes and was hitting winners too when the opportunity came. He showed signs of his 2016 best and was hitting winners at will for a brief time. But Rublev too showed why he’s one of the best in the world and retaliated on serve. The set went into the tie breaker with Rublev eventually winning it to close out the match.

After the match, Murray congratulated Rublev and acknowledged the quality of tennis this week in Abu Dhabi. He said: “I got three good matches here… Andrey played really well today. He’s got a really big game. I just need to find a way to turn some of these matches against these top players around.”
