“I needed this match,” Andrey Rublev over the moon after defeating World No. 1 Jannik Sinner to enter Montreal Masters semifinal
Andrey Rublev defeated Jannik Sinner in three sets on Saturday to enter the semifinals of the ATP 1000 tournament in Canada.

Russian tennis ace Andrey Rublev was over the moon after he beat World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the Canadian Masters quarterfinal on Saturday. Rublev defeated Sinner in three sets to enter the semifinals and got closer to winning his third title of the season. The Russian ace will now face Matteo Arnaldi in the semifinal.
While it is still uncertain if Rublev will be able to lift the title in Montreal, it can be said that he will walk back happy, having defeated the top-ranked player in the world. The 26-year-old was delighted after defeating Sinner as he admitted that he needed this match.
Post-match, Rublev said it was a great match for him and that ending on the winning side in such intense matches is always special. While he was hoping to just put up a fight, ending the match with a win was a great result for him.
Jannik is an amazing player. He’s been playing unbelievable for the last 2 years. I was just hoping I’d be able to fight with him and to show great tennis. In the end, I think we had a lot of great rallies. A lot of long rallies. To be able to win this kind of match is always special. I needed this match. Especially after some bad moments this year. Rublev defeated Sinner 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 in a rain-interrupted match. With this win, the Russian became the only player to defeat both Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in the 2024 season.
Andrey Rublev ups his game at the right time to trump Jannik Sinner
Andrey Rublev came into the match against Jannik Sinner after defeating Brandon Nakashima in the afternoon. The two players had to play twice with the rain playing a spoilsport earlier. Sinner had some issues with his groin and Rublev used it to his advantage.
Rublev started the match on a positive note, taking the first set 6-3. However, Rublev looked off track in the second set wherein he lost five straight games to drop the set. But the World No. 8 did not let this one-sided defeat in the second set get to his head as Rublev saved five break points in the opening game of the deciding set.
He broke the top seed in the next game, lost just three points on serve in the rest of the set, and broke Sinner for a third time to seal the victory. In all, Rublev saved 10 of the 12 break points he faced. With this win, Rublev improved his head-to-head record against Sinner to 3-5.
