Alex Popyrin has decided to withdraw from the US Open, which has given way to Murray to enlist in the main draw. The Australian, Alex Popyrin was in the main draw and set to play the US Open from August 31. He has joined his compatriots Nick Kyrigios and Ashleigh Barty who too declined to participate in the US Open.

Murray to make the most

Every day the US Open list sees a new player withdrawing. After Rafael Nadal have decided not to participate in the US Open, the next-gen players in the draw such as Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem will try to make it their first slam. However, the absence of big names will surely make it a comparatively easier draw even for Murray.

Recently Andy Murray spoke about his participation at the US Open, “The situation I’ve been in last few years I’ve not had opportunity to play in many Slams, I don’t know how many opportunities I’ll have left to play in Slams.

So, while I’m feeling relatively decent, obviously there is a risk there but I want to try and play in them and enjoy the biggest events again. I missed that a lot, I’ve missed it. I love playing the biggest events, even though this will be different with no fans but that is something I care about and willing to take a risk to go and play.”

The last player to get a place in the Main Draw was the Indian Sumit Nagal, who ranks 127. Murray’s wild card spot will now be given to the American Mitchell Krueger.

Last seen in the Battle of Brits exhibition matches, Murray will surely be looking forward to resuming his career with a solid performance in New York. He had been away due to a hip injury.
