Former British tennis player Greg Rusedski believes that the Wimbledon Championship 2021 will be the farewell tournament for his fellow countrymen Andy Murray.

Murray has been out of action for much of last year due to a hip injury. The three-time Grand Slam champion did participate in the US Open, but couldn’t progress very far as he bowed out in the second round.

Rusedski reckons that he will struggle to fight it out at the highest level due to his prolonged absence.

Speaking to Tennis 365, Rusedski said that Murray’s return to the top of the game is highly unlikely due to his injuries.

Last year, Murray complained about his sore hip and revealed that the Wimbledon Championship 2020 can be his last tournament. However, the event got cancelled due to the Covid pandemic, keeping the Brit’s tennis career on a little longer.

“I hope for Murray that he can have a big Wimbledon Championship and there is a crowd for him there. He’s got problems with the hip still so for me, for him to win a Major I think it’s too hard for him but he could still have a good run,” Rusedski said.

“Even to win a Masters series is a big ask, semis possibly. Masters series is back-to-back and he hasn’t had much tennis during Covid. Who knows if Wimbledon could be his last event?” Rusedski said.

According to Rusedski, Murray has nothing left to prove. He has accomplished a lot in his career and will go down as one of Britain’s greatest sporting heroes.

Rusedski says, “He’s had an incredible career. Two Wimbledon titles, two Olympic golds, World No.1, he has nothing to prove to anyone.”

He goes on to say, “His win in an ATP 500 event in Antwerp last year was an incredible performance and I hope he plays as long as he wants and gets the send-off he deserves.”
