Daniil Medvedev outlasted Stan Wawrinka when they met in the first round of the Rotterdam Open. Watching the match was Andy Murray, who couldn’t believe that at 39, Wawrinka was giving a tough competition to one of the best players.
The first set was pushed to the tie-break, with Medvedev failing to convert two set points. The Russian, who was the champion in the tournament in 2023, then made an emphatic comeback, clinching the next two sets to progress to the next round.
6-7(8), 6-4, 6-1 read the scoreline in Medvedev’s first match in the tournament he played for the first time since 2023. Murray, who retired at the 2024 Paris Olympics at the age of 37, following which he coached Novak Djokovic in the recently concluded Australian Open, lauded the Swiss veteran for his efforts to stay in the game.

Murray, who was with Djokovic for the Australian Open, has not yet announced whether he will still be coaching the Serb. Djokovic is nursing the hamstring injury he suffered at the Melbourne Slam, and the announcement is expected to come in the near future.
Daniil Medvedev bidding to win his first ATP title since 2023
Daniil Medvedev now holds a 3-2 head-to-head record against Stan Wawrinka after the Rotterdam Open clash. The 2021 US Open champion blamed his lack of confidence for his defeat in the first set and lauded Wawrinka.
Medvedev next faces Italy’s Mattia Bellucci in the second round. He could meet 2023 Australian Open finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals.
If Medvedev went on to reach the final and win the match, it would be his first title since the 2023 Italian Open. The 28-year-old will also be bagging an ATP title twice as all of his 20 trophies have come in different tournaments.
