Serena Williams’ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, has sparked a heated debate in tennis following Jannik Sinner‘s heroic triumph at the Australian Open. While many see the Italian as the player to beat, Mouratoglou took a different stance, believing that Carlos Alcaraz has stronger credentials.

Before his opening-round match in Rotterdam, Alcaraz was asked about Mouratoglou’s statement. However, the Spaniard disagreed, saying that Sinner is indeed the best player in the world today. Mouratoglou couldn’t resist responding with a classic one-word reply to Alcaraz’s remarks.

Alcaraz and Sinner are two of the biggest names on the tennis tour right now. They have dominated recent Grand Slams, winning the last five majors since 2024 and claiming six of the last seven.

The two have faced each other three times in 2024 on the ATP Tour. Alcaraz has won all of their meetings, including a thrilling five-set battle in the Roland Garros semifinals.

Carlos Alcaraz hopes to make history by winning Rotterdam

Carlos Alcaraz is the biggest name at the Rotterdam Open this year. The Spaniard is aiming to win his first indoor title. If he succeeds, he will join a group of legendary players who have won this event before.

Arthur Ashe was the first Rotterdam champion in 1972. He won three titles, also triumphing in 1975 and 1976. Jimmy Connors won in 1978 and 1981, with no player in the Open Era winning more indoor titles than him. Bjorn Borg claimed his only Rotterdam title in 1979, defeating John McEnroe in the final.

Swedish star Stefan Edberg won back-to-back titles in 1987 and 1988. He defeated McEnroe in his first win and then beat Miloslav Mecir for his second. Roger Federer also won this event three times. The Swiss claimed his first title in 2005, added another in 2012, and secured his final win in 2018.

If Alcaraz wins in Rotterdam, he will add his name to this prestigious list. Many of these champions were among the best of their time. A victory here would be a big step in Alcaraz’s growing career.
