2003 US Open champion Andy Roddick has been left baffled by Novak Djokovic‘s view of his relatively quiet 2024 season. The Serbian has not won any Grand Slam titles this year and has lost his No. 1 ranking.

Roddick is amused by the fact that, although this is not the greatest season of Djokovic’s career, it is still better than most players’ career-defining seasons. Djokovic’s one major highlight in 2024 has been his Olympic gold medal win.

His take was completely rational. His worst performing year ever he made the semifinals of Australia, the finals of Wimbledon, won the Olympic Gold, finals of Masters. That’s a career year for most of us.

Djokovic has secured entry into the BNP Paribas Masters, the final Masters 1000 event of the season. He is the defending champion, having beaten Grigor Dimitrov in last year’s final.

Additionally, Djokovic has stated his commitment to playing for Serbia and competing in Grand Slams. With Serbia still in the Davis Cup, the Belgrade native will look to add to his achievements at the national level. His only Davis Cup win came in 2010.

Novak Djokovic passes Rafael Nadal in an incredible stat

Novak Djokovic reached the finals of the 2024 ATP Shanghai Masters, a tournament he has won four times—more than anyone else. However, in the final, he lost to Jannik Sinner, with the Italian winning 7-6(4), 6-3. This was only their second meeting at the Masters level, the first being at the 2021 Monte Carlo. Djokovic remains at 99 career titles after his runner-up finish.

Despite the loss, Djokovic achieved a new milestone in Shanghai. He now holds the highest winning percentage at ATP Masters 1000 events, surpassing Rafael Nadal. Djokovic’s win in the third round against Flavio Cobolli secured this record. He dominated the match, winning 6-1, 6-2 in just 63 minutes.

Djokovic’s Masters 1000 winning percentage is now 82.02%, just ahead of Nadal’s 82.00%. After a first-round bye, the former World No.1 faced Alex Michelsen in the second round. It was a close match, but Djokovic managed to win 7-6(3), 7-6(9) in nearly two hours.

This was Djokovic’s first appearance in Shanghai since 2019. To reach the final, he defeated Roman Saifullin, Jakub Mensik, and Taylor Fritz. In the semifinals, he extended his undefeated record against Fritz to 10-0. Despite his strong run, Djokovic fell short in the final against Sinner.
