Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz‘s French Open clash is now the longest final in the history of the tournament. Alcaraz came from two sets down to defend his title.

The most impressive stat about Alcaraz’s victory was that he saved three match points en route to the title. Following the match, former player Andy Roddick lavished some praise on the young Italian for the way he carries himself. He said on his Served podcast:

Jannik might be the classiest person I have ever seen. He had a legit argument with the umpire in the fifth about a non-call, which means you are playing a point instead of looking at a second serve with no face or tone or anything else. He genuinely thanked everyone who worked on the match afterwards.

Before this French Open, the three-time Grand Slam champion had never made it to the final. Last year, he was defeated in the semifinal by Alcaraz in five sets.

I would not have done that. I am not a good enough person to do that. I would have made some snarky, stupid remark. It’s just really impressive.

Andy Roddick added

Had a Sinner won, it would have been his third straight victory at a Major as before Roland Garros, he defended his Australian Open crown by beating Alexander Zverev and home favorite Taylor Fritz in last year’s US Open final.

Sinner now has suffered his first defeat in a Grand Slam final. The five-time Grand Slam champion, on the other hand, is 5-0 in the Major summit clashes. Sinner also played his third straight final this season, following the Australian Open and the Italian Open, which he lost to Alcaraz.

It was Alcaraz’s fifth final of the season and his fourth straight one on clay. He has now captured three clay-court titles this season after his victory at the Monte Carlo Masters and the Italian Open. He lost only the Barcelona Open final and had skipped the Madrid Open due to an injury.

Jack Sock doesn’t think Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner would beat Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros

Just before the final, John McEnroe claimed that Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner would beat Rafael Nadal at his best at the French Open. Sam Querrey, on the Nothing Major podcast, said he likes Alcaraz over Nadal and that the young Spaniard would have a 4-6 win-loss record over the tennis great if they met at the French Open. Jack Sock, however, is not of the same opinion.

Prime Rafa is winning in straight sets against both those guys. They are not hitting the ball like that against Rafa in his prime. He is hitting those heavy forehands. He is doing what Rafa does.

Jack Sock said on the Nothing Major podcast

Alcaraz met Nadal thrice and was successful in beating him only once. Sinner too clashed with Nadal thrice but lost every match, including twice at Roland Garros.

The 22-year-old has become the third youngest man to win the French Open after Bjorn Borg and Nadal. He is also the eighth man in the Open Era to successfully defend the French Open and the third man in the Open Era to save a championship point en route to a Grand Slam victory.

Alcaraz and Sinner will now shift their focus to the grass swing. The former has clinched three titles on the surface while the 23-year-old has bagged one.

At Wimbledon, Alcaraz will be entering as the two-time defending champion (beat Novak Djokovic in both finals) while Sinner’s best performance came in 2023 when he reached the semifinals. Last year, Daniil Medvedev ended his campaign in the quarterfinals.
