Iga Swiatek is dealing with a slump in form as she is struggling even on clay, her favorite surface. While she was still playing at the Italian Open, Swiatek discussed the paparazzi’s intrusion in her private life.

Swiatek also criticized the Polish media for creating false “theories” about her. The treatment she’s receiving from Polish media frustrated Andy Roddick who did not hold back while criticizing them, comparing Swiatek’s situation with that of Men’s World No.1 Jannik Sinner.

Many believe the doping scandal badly affected Swiatek. Roddick pointed out how Sinner is receiving great support from the Italian fans as well as the media in the ongoing Italian Open, the tournament where the World No.1 made his comeback after serving his three-month ban given to him by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). He said on his Served with Andy Roddick Podcast:

She’s complaining about the Polish media. I’m sorry, but if you’re a sports journalist in Poland and you criticize Iga week after week, you’re a f*****g moron. She’s the best sportswoman you’ve ever had. Compare that to the Italian press giving Jannik a standing ovation when he enters the press room, which is also ridiculous this week in Rome.

Swiatek tested positive for trimetazidine and was handed a one-month by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA). The ban also included the three-month provisional suspension which forced the Pole to skip three tournaments, as a consequence of which, she was dethroned by Aryna Sabalenka on the rankings table.

Sinner, on the other hand, had clostebol in his sample and initially escaped a ban. Later the WADA demanded before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to ban the World No.1 for one or more years. But before the scheduled CAS hearing in April, the two parties reached a settlement agreement in January with WADA banning him only for three months.

The Italian Open is Sinner’s second tournament of the season after the Australian Open which he defended by defeating World No.2 Alexander Zverev. Sinner, who knocked out Casper Ruud 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals, has set up a semifinal clash with America’s Tommy Paul.

Rennae Stubbs gives her verdict on Iga Swiatek’s current form

Rennae Stubbs compared Iga Swiatek‘s situation to Novak Djokovic‘s. The 24-time Grand Slam champion, twice this season, registered three consecutive defeats and skipped the Italian Open for the first time since 2007.

He has reached the twilight of his career and is struggling to win matches. Since winning his first gold medal at the Paris Olympics last year, the Serb reached two finals, in Shanghai last year and Miami this year, losing both. Stubbs suggested that Swiatek is not in a good state mentally. She said on The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast:

It is kinda like what is happening with Novak, but in a different way because he is older and there is no question he is aging. The drive isn't there anymore. But the drive is certainly there for Iga. I just wonder there is a little bit of scar tissue - I talk about it all the time - on her brain.

Swiatek, last year, won three of her five titles on clay, including the French Open. This season, she lost in the Stuttgart Open quarterfinals to Jelena Ostapenko, to Coco Gauff in the Madrid Open semifinals, and to Danielle Collins in the third round of the ongoing Italian WTA 1000 event. Swiatek was the defending champion in Madrid and Rome, beating Aryna Sabalenka in both the finals last year.

She has not yet reached the final since winning her fourth Roland Garros title last year by beating Jasmine Paolini. This year, except for the last European clay-court WTA 1000 of the season, the 23-year-old progressed to every quarterfinal.
