Andy Roddick has revealed that Carlos Alcaraz made an error during his clash against Jannik Sinner at the Cincinnati Open final. The men’s singles final in Cincinnati looked set for a blockbuster clash between Sinner and Alcaraz. But unlike the previous 13 meetings, the match didn’t end as expected.

Sinner took ill a day before the match and despite not feeling at his best physically, he still made it to the court against Alcaraz. But the Italian could only manage to win eight points in the first five games. He also lost his serve three times and was down 0-5 in twenty-three minutes of the ATP Masters 1000 encounter.

During a medical timeout, he had a brief discussion with a doctor and physio. After that, he went to inform Alcaraz that he was retiring from the match. He then went to wave to the crowd while the umpire informed them about his decision. After going back to his seat, Alcaraz came up to him and consoled him with a hug before also waving to the crowd.

During the latest episode of the Served Podcast, Andy Roddick revealed that Alcaraz should have kept his distance from Sinner given that the Italian star was ill. He added that if he were the Spaniard coach that’s what he would tell Alcaraz:

The only error Carlos made all week was his proximity to Sinner once we suspected Sinner was not feeling well. Maybe it’s just for the day, I don’t care. There is no hug at the net. These two are the classiest people. I love it. But if I’m his coach, I am going to be saying get away! Don’t stand next to him. Don’t go see if he’s okay. Skip the pictures. Do not get close to him. Carlos, get away from him if he’s sick!

Alcaraz has now extended his head-to-head record against Sinner to 9-5 and has won six of their last seven meetings on tour. His only loss in over a year and a half against the Italian star was at the Wimbledon Championships, where Sinner came down from a set to end the World No.2’s hopes of winning the title for the third time.

However, that led Sinner to withdraw from the revamped US Open mixed doubles event due to sickness. The 24-year-old was expected to pair with former doubles World No.1 Katerina Siniakova in the event but after he withdrew, the US Open Chiefs replaced the pair with American duo Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison. The tournament has received heavy backlash from fans on social media for snubbing Siniakova after Sinner pulled out of the tournament.

Andy Roddick reveals the reason he’s worried for Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz has lost only one match since May 2025. The Spaniard claimed the Italian Open, French Open, Queen’s Club Championships, and Cincinnati Open in the process. His loss came at the Wimbledon Championships against Jannik Sinner in the final. He currently holds a 54-6 win-loss record on tour this season.

During the aforementioned podcast, Andy Roddick revealed that the reason for being worried about Alcaraz getting close to Sinner is because he doesn’t want to see him miss the US Open singles event due to illness:

You have the US Open coming up. You have made the finals of your last seven events; every event he has played since Miami, he has made at least the finals of. He’s on an absolute heater.

Alcaraz participated in the revamped US Open mixed doubles event despite winning the Cincinnati Open on Monday (August 18). He immediately traveled to compete alongside Emma Raducanu in the event and lost to Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula in straight sets in the opening round.
