Ahead of the 2025 Masters Tournament, there has been a major development. Former champion Angel Cabrera has committed to play in the upcoming edition at the Augusta National after spending 30 months in prison.
Cabrera has enjoyed a stellar career in golf. He has won 54 professional events, which includes the 2009 Masters Tournament and the 2007 U.S. Open. In 2009, he overcame a playoff round against Chad Campbell and Kenny Perry to claim the prestigious green jacket.
In the past few years though, his name has been trending for all the wrong reasons. Three years ago, the Argentine golfer was arrested on charges of domestic violence. After being convicted of second-degree assault, Cabrera would spend 30 months in prison and was released on parole.
As a past champion, he was invited to the 2024 Masters Tournament last year. However, his visa application for the United States was rejected, which forced him to sit out of the event.
Unlike last year, this time, he will be at the Augusta National. As per reports from Golfweek, Ben Crenshaw, who holds the Champions Dinner since 2005, is excited to see the Argentine golfer return.
I tell you what, I’m excited to see Angel. The focus of the dinner will be on Scottie (Scheffler), but it’ll be great to have Angel back. I’m looking forward to seeing him.

The start in April will be Cabrera’s first start in the Masters Tournament since 2019. He did not play in the 2020 and 2021 pandemic editions and was spending time in prison during the 2022 and 2023 editions. In his last appearance, he missed the cut while firing scores of 82 and 75 in the first two round and finishing 13-over par.
Social media reacts to Angel Cabrera committing for 2025 Masters Tournament
Angel Cabrera’s committing for the 2025 Masters Tournament has stirred mixed reaction from fans across social media. While some are happy to see him return, some questioned the decision to allow him to play again after his personal life issues.

Some fans even joked about him being paired with Scottie Scheffler. The reigning World No.1 will enter the event as the defending champion. Fans pointed out Scheffler’s arrest during the PGA Championship and wrote, “Pair him with scottie.“

Shouldn’t be allowed back. They say it’s a tournament like no other. Allowing wife beaters in will certainly make it so. Ban him. Like all of golf should have done.

After scores of 66, 72, and 71 in the first three rounds, Scheffler fired a score of 4-under 68 in the final round of the 2024 edition to claim his second green jacket. This was one of his 9 wins that year as he went on to be named the 2024 PGA Tour Player of the Year.
