Jannik Sinner was compared to tennis great Venus Williams by Angelo Binaghi, the Italian Tennis President. Sinner needed a lot of improvement when he first started out but he worked on certain areas and in 2024, he became the most successful men’s player.

Binaghi met the World No.1 for the first time when the latter lifted the Next Gen ATP Finals in 2019. He said his compatriot had one weakness which reminded him of seven-time Grand Slam singles winner Williams.

According to the 64-year-old, Sinner has worked on his weakness, improved his serve and also his game at the net, and has become ‘a rocket’ when it comes to his movement on the court.

He struck me for his education and simplicity. On the court, you could already see his enormous value, from a technical point of view he was of a very high level. However, he still had to fill some physical gaps, he was a bit immature. He reminded me a bit of Venus Williams: incredible potential, but athletic difficulties in covering the court.

Angelo Binaghi told La Nuova Sardenga

Sinner, after improvement, won eight titles in 2024, including the Australian Open and the US Open. Throughout the season, he was consistent, especially on the hard courts. He won 73 of the 79 matches he played in 2024.

Angelo Binaghi says he never stopped backing Jannik Sinner

As the Big 3 started reaching the twilight of their career, Carlos Alcaraz started making headlines, and when he won the 2022 US Open, most from the tennis world thought the talented youngster was the next big thing in tennis. But Angelo Binaghi never doubted Jannik Sinner‘s ability and even backed him when he decided not to play in the Davis Cup.

It was the period in which Alcaraz had exploded, and everyone was obsessed with the Spaniard; Spectacular, solid, very fast, gritty. But to those who said maybe we could have someone like that in Italy, I replied: ‘Sinner for life. Give him time, and we’ll talk about it again.’

Apart from the eight singles title, Sinner also defended the Davis Cup title with Italy. He is now gearing up for the next season and in Melbourne, his task will be to defend his crown.

But it’s uncertain whether the 23-year-old would still be a part of the circuit or not for the rest of the season. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will be giving its verdict on his doping case in February.
