World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has been in sensational form and typically has had things under control at Wimbledon. However, he was as helpless as any fan when his girlfriend, Anna Kalinskaya, retired in the middle of the second set against Elena Rybakina.

The 17th seed, Kalinskaya, had to take medical timeouts early in the match. However, her resistance finally broke, and she withdrew while trailing 3-6, 0-3.

Sinner reached his third consecutive Wimbledon quarterfinal yesterday after a commanding straight-set win, 6-2, 6-4, 7-6, over Ben Shelton. However, he would have liked to see Kalinskaya reach this stage in the women’s draw.

The Russian tennis player made it to the second week of Wimbledon for the first time in her career. Meanwhile, Sinner will play Daniil Medvedev for a place in the Wimbledon semifinal tomorrow.

Elena Rybakina and Elina Svitolina reach Wimbledon quarterfinals

Elina Svitolina found it very hard to play her Wimbledon fourth-round match after hearing about Russian strikes in Ukraine. According to the Associated Press, the attacks killed many people and badly damaged a children’s hospital. The 29-year-old cried during an on-court interview after defeating China’s Wang Xinyu 6-2, 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals. She wore a black ribbon to show her sorrow.

Elena Rybakina, the fourth seed, showed why she is the favorite to win the title with a strong performance against Anna Kalinskaya. The Kazakhstan player was leading 6-3, 3-0 when Kalinskaya retired due to a wrist injury. The 17th seed from Russia took a medical timeout but could not continue. She left the court in tears.

Rybakina, who is now 25, is the only former Wimbledon champion left in the women’s draw. Her chances are higher with top players like Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff being knocked out over the weekend. Rybakina faced an early challenge but won five straight games to take the first set.

In the second set, the 25-year-old broke serve early and built a strong lead. Kalinskaya, visibly struggling, chose to retire to avoid further injury. Now, Rybakina will face Svitolina in the next round.
