Annu Rani shatters her own national record; narrowly misses out on Olympic Games cutoff

Annu Rani broke the National Record as she moved closer to the elusive Olympic qualification with a 63.24m throw on Monday, bettering her own two-year-old mark for a new National record on day one of the 24th Federation Cup. Annu has been consistently throwing over 61m both in and out of competition.

On Monday, she bettered her mark by 0.81m than her previous best (62.43m) in 2019 and almost a metre more than the previous meet record (62.34m), also held by her. The Olympic Qualification for women’s javelin throw is 64m.

Annu Rani has won a bronze in the 2014 Asian Games and a silver in the Asian Championships in 2019, was representing Uttar Pradesh in the national event. Sanjana Choudhary of Rajasthan was a distant second with a best throw of 54.55m while Haryana’s Kumari Sharmila was third with a best effort of 50.78m in the eight-athlete field.

The Federation Cup has a lot of big names missing. Notably, ace sprinter Hima Das is one of the big names missing out as is javelin thrower Shivpal Singh due to an ankle injury. Another big name to miss out is Arpinder Singh who is the national record holder in triple jump.
