Former champion Anthony Joshua recently lost to Daniel Dubois. The duo contested for the undisputed IBF heavyweight title. The fifth-round knockout defeat at Wembley Stadium was particularly scathing. Joshua’s long-time critic, Carl Froch, highlighted several key issues in Joshua’s performance and his future prospects. Here is what happened:

Carl Froch recently posted a video on his YouTube channel commenting on the fight. He noted that from the beginning, Anthony Joshua appeared outmatched by Daniel Dubois. Joshua is a two-time heavyweight champion with vast experience in high-pressure bouts. However, Froch was particularly harsh in describing how Joshua responded to Dubois’ punches.

The worrying thing for me is every time Joshua got clipped on the chin his legs were gone, his powers of recovery were awful. This is the problem when you get the silk pyjamas, you don't want it anymore. I question Joshua's desire to be in that boxing ring anymore.

Froch observed that Dubois was confident and maintained his composure. Meanwhile, Joshua seemed to struggle with both the physical and mental aspects of the fight. Joshua being unable to recover from the first knockdown was a major concern for Froch. The retired boxer even suggested that Joshua might have been mentally defeated before the first punch was thrown.

The body language and approach of Joshua differed from that of his past few encounters. Froch questioned whether Joshua still had the motivation and mental fortitude required to compete at the highest level. Joshua has publicly stated that he intends to keep fighting. However, Froch seemed unconvinced. He stated that Joshua may no longer have what it takes to succeed at the elite level.

Tony Bellew comments on Anthony Joshua’s loss to Daniel Dubois

Bellew was reportedly left “gutted” and “heartbroken” after the unexpected result. Speaking to IFL TV, the former champion gave Daniel Dubois his due credits.

No one has knocked Joshua down multiple times like this. As such, Dubois deserves all the praise. Nevertheless, he also expressed confidence in Joshua’s ability to make a successful comeback.

I hope he says he wants a rematch because Joshua, when he lets his hands go, is the most destructive heavyweight in the world. Tonight he didn't let his hands go quick enough.

From the start, Daniel Dubois aggressively pressured Joshua. He landed a massive right hand that knocked him down at the end of the first round. Anthony Joshua struggled to recover throughout the fight, enduring more knockdowns in the third and fifth rounds. Joshua was unable to survive the final blow in the fifth, resulting in the referee waving off the fight.
