“Anthony Smith should have taken your title,” says Petr Yan on Jon Jones’ comments on illegal knee controversy
On March 6th history was made in UFC as Russian fighter, Petr Yan became the first fighter to lose the title due to disqualification. Yan went up against Aljamain Sterling who is now the champion of the bantamweight division.
Yan lost his UFC Bantamweight title to Aljamain due to an illegal knee that was headed towards Sterling. While Sterling was down on his knee, Yan struck his opponent with a knee to the face which was called for disqualification. The world went bonkers after that fight.
Reactions poured all over the internet as Petr lost his title. A lot of people including MMA aces criticized Petr for fighting dirty while some went after Sterling’s inability to fight. One of the biggest reactions to the fight was from a former champion, Jon Jones.
Jones has been pretty vocal these days on Twitter and has spoken his mind out. This time it was in support of Aljamain Sterling. Jones wrote, “Aljamain came in great shape, he fought forward every second of that fight, not his fault he got illegally kneed,” Jones wrote. “Congratulations champion, you did it.”
Former Bantamweight champion, Petr Yan not happy with Jon Jones’ comments
After Jones tweeted out his 2 cents on UFC 259’s bantamweight fight, Petr Yan took offense to it and struck back. The Russian replied to Jones on Twitter. “Anthony Smith should have taken your title,” Yan wrote.
Petr Yan in the post-match conference explained that he didn’t mean to hit Sterling with an illegal knee. Jon Jones has had a similar experience in the past. Jones was on the brink of losing his title to Anthony Smith when he hit Smith with a knee when he was grounded.
The match wasn’t stopped because Anthony decided to fight ahead and later lost the fight due to a unanimous decision. But Yan is looking to win his title back in a rematch soon.
