Many players have tried their hands in the NFL. Some have lived up to their expectations, whereas some have not. Then there are some that have far exceeded the norm, such as Antonio Brown. The former wide receiver was unreal on the field. But lately, he is off-field antics, such as his discussion with former teammate Le’Veon Bell about CTE showed a quirky side.
The two former Pittsburgh Steelers teammates sat down on the latest episode of the CTESPN podcast. There, the two got into a discussion regarding CTE when Brown asked, “Do you think I got CTE?”
I don’t think you got CTE.Le’Veon Bell replied
Then when Le’Veon Bell answered Brown, asking him if he had CTE, Bell posed a confused state.
Ain’t CTE like basically like when we forget s**t.Le’Veon Bell said
To this, Brown replied with what he thought CTE is.
I feel like people try to frame CTE as a concussion you may have, but yo, we had a bunch of concussions. You could live after a concussion. I feel like it's a characteristic of traumas that we all as people go through. Any kid having to go through that is building some kind of trauma because now, as a kid, you just become more aggressive. You develop anger.Antonio Brown said
Brown essentially suggested that anyone who has had childhood trauma will have CTE of some sort. Basically, dismissing the studies and reports suggesting playing football leads to CTE.
Antonio Brown may be dismissive of the disease, but many players in the NFL are aware that extreme contact with their heads can lead to CTE. The NFL has tried to limit the impact players take on their heads. Such as the introduction of the Guardian Cap.
However, during the times when Brown played, and the contacts he had taken to the head, it could be possible. But this was one of his interesting interactions on social media. Asking Le’Veon Bell directly on camera about CTE when the NFL tries, it’s best to stay away from those three letters is unreal.
Antonio Brown takes shots at Guardian Cap
This preseason is seeing many players use the Guardian Cap in practices. Recently, Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor took to the field during their preseason game against the Denver Broncos with the cap on. To this, Antonio Brown, through his CTESPN Network, replied with a caption that read; “Make CTE great again.”
He’s taking another shot at dismissing CTE entirely. Brown wants to refute any suggestion that he or any player has it, framing their flamboyance as part of their nature both on and off the field. It’s possible he’s using this controversial NFL topic to his advantage or simply trying to convince his peers that CTE is not a concern.
Or it could just be that he is completely ignorant of what the perils are of playing contact football. CTE is a complex and serious issue; joking about it fails to educate young football players on its risks.
