“Any tournament needs Djokovic,” Barry Cowan picks Novak Djokovic as the favourite to win the Wimbledon

There is a lot of hullabaloo around the Wimbledon this year, especially with the Russian and Belarusian players getting banned for this year’s Championship due to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. So there was a lot of doubt over Novak Djokovic‘s participation considering his vaccination stance. While there were mixed reports for some weeks, the All England Club themselves have announced that vaccination status is not a criterion for participation.
So Novak Djokovic will be able to feature at this year’s Wimbledon and also will look to defend his title. The Serb has gone through a lot this year starting with his deportation from Australia where he was not allowed to participate at the Australian Open due to his vaccination status. He only played three matches in Dubai and then again missed the entirety of the Golden Swing and also the Indian Wells and Miami Open.
However, after hearing the news of Djokovic’s participation at the Wimbledon, tennis commentator Barry Cowan feels that the World No.1 is the favourite to win the Wimbledon title. He also added how events need the likes of Djokovic, Nadal, Federer, Serena Williams and the best players to increase the level and intensity of the event. “I think any tournament need Djokovic, any tournament need (Rafael) Nadal, any tournament needs (Roger) Federer, any tournament needs Serena Williams,” he told Sky Sports.
‘What he has achieved is remarkable,” Barry Cowan lauds Novak Djokovic for his excellent record at the Wimbledon
Cowan admits that Djokovic is not fully ready at the moment but he understands that there is enough time in between for the Serb to make himself absolutely match fit ahead of the Championships. He will also feature in the Roland Garros and there again he will fight to defend his title. So keeping everything in mind, Cowan has picked Djokovic as the favourite to win Wimbledon again.
“Let’s hope that we can have a great, positive story at Wimbledon with these players. We’ve seen Novak play some astonishing matches in the past and last year, what he achieved again, was remarkable and he is undercooked at the moment. What’s positive for Djokovic is that he will feel that he can build a head up of steam and for me right now, he would be the favourite for Wimbledon and win another major,” Cowan concluded.
After faltering in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters, Djokovic reached the finals of his home event, at the Serbia Open but lost out against World No.8 Andrey Rublev. Rublev won the title clash 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-0 to bag the title. Djokovic on the other hand got a lot of match practice and gradually got back in shape. He still needs to keep up the momentum and will be seen in action at the Madrid Masters.
