Archery World Cup: Abhishek Verma clinches gold in a high scoring final

Ace compound archer Abhishek Verma clinched the gold medal in the third stage of the World Cup. Verma lifted the World Cup title folowing a high scoring final against America’s Krish Schraff. Verma and Schraff finished with 148 points apiece and sending the final game to a shoot out.

Verma prevailed as he took the gold medal with a perfect 10 while the American finished with nine. Netherland’s Mike Schloesser finished with the bronze medal as he toppled Anton Bulaev 150-147.

Returning to action after almost two years, the two-time World Cup winner Abhishek Verma, who had qualified as 11th seed, shot two perfect 10s including one X in the shoot-off to set up a last-four clash against Bulaev of Russia. In his very first outing following the pandemic, Verma clinched gold proving his temperament.

Verma stormed into the semi-finals of the individual section in the evening session with a 146-146 (10-9) shoot-off win over Martin Laursen of Denmark.

In the women’s compound individual section, Jyothi Surekha Vennam made a quarterfinal exit losing to Andrea Becerra of Mexico 143-147.
