Argentina’s Davis Cup captain, Guillermo Coria, called Jannik Sinner one of the best world No. 1 players in tennis history. Coria and his team were not surprised by Sinner’s outstanding performance, which helped Italy defeat Argentina in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Davis Cup Finals.

After Lorenzo Musetti lost the opening match to Francisco Cerundolo, Sinner turned things around for Italy. He defeated Argentine No. 1 Sebastian Baez with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win, leveling the tie and setting up a crucial doubles match.

We all knew Sinner’s level, the moment he is in. We faced one of the best number ones in history. His level did not surprise us at all. Because of that, one has to take into account three important things: how our players are physically, also the power of the rival and the alternatives we have to form in each of the points.

Guillermo Coria said in the post-match interview (H/T: FootBoom)

Italy’s captain, Filippo Volandri, chose Sinner and Matteo Berrettini to play the doubles match, replacing the originally nominated pair of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori. Sinner and Berrettini secured a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni, sending Italy to the semi-finals in Malaga.

Italy showed great respect for our doubles, leaving out a very competitive pair that came from the Finals and fielding the No 1 in the world even with little rest behind him. We were almost sure that it would have gone like this in the event of 1-1. Gonzalez and Molteni were prepared for this eventuality and I never thought of putting a singles player in their place. They deservedly won, we congratulate them.”

Guillermo Coria added

Coria praised Sinner’s exceptional talent and said that his team expected Sinner to step up in a deciding doubles match. Sinner’s efforts came just days after his ATP Finals title win in Turin. Italy will now face Australia in the semi-finals, while Germany and the Netherlands compete in the other semi-final.

Jannik Sinner sends message to Rafael Nadal on his retirement

Jannik Sinner has joined many tennis stars in sending a heartfelt message to Rafael Nadal following his retirement. The Spaniard played the final match of his legendary 23-year career during Spain’s Davis Cup quarter-final against the Netherlands in Malaga.

Rafa, what can I say? Just thank you so much for everything you have done and what you have given us as a player, but especially as a person. Incredible career, just wanted to say huge congrats to you, to your team, to your family. And I wish you nothing but the best for a new chapter of your life. Ciao, ciao.

Nadal lost in straight sets to Botic van de Zandschulp in the opening match of Spain’s unexpected 2-1 defeat. This marked the end of an incredible journey for the former world No. 1.

Sinner shared a short video on his Instagram story to thank Nadal and congratulate him on his remarkable career. The Italian and the Spaniard faced each other three times between 2020 and 2021, all on clay. Nadal won each match, including two encounters at the French Open and one at the Italian Open.

There was a chance for Italy and Spain to meet in the Davis Cup final, as they were placed on opposite sides of the Final 8 draw. However, Spain’s early exit made that match-up impossible.
