French tennis star Arnaud Clement has shared positive thoughts about Alexander Zverev ahead of Roland Garros. The German suffered a heartbreaking loss in the Australian Open final to Jannik Sinner on Sunday (January 26).

However, Clement believes Zverev has the ability to turn his fortunes around in Grand Slam tournaments. The Frenchman also thinks that Zverev will need some favorable draws to achieve his Grand Slam dream.

I am always very tough, and it is not a particular desire on my part to be so. But when for example he makes comments about the work put in, in fact the work put in is visible, that is to say that we do not need to say it, it is visible on the court. If we arrive the day before Roland-Garros and we say to ourselves that it is perhaps the moment for Zverev, we must especially see what will happen before.

Arnaud Clement said in a Eurosport show

Arnaud Clement went on to weigh how things might pan out if Zverev’s game sees no evolution between now and the upcoming Roland Garros.

And if there is no evolution in his game between now and Roland-Garros, it will be the same thing and he will not be able to win. “Not win” is a bit harsh because it depends on the circumstances: if Sinner is suspended and Alcaraz injured, maybe he will have a chance. But if there are these two guys who are still in the draw and in full possession of their means, for me, he has no chance of beating them both. His wait-and-see attitude can never be compensated for by his quality of service.

Jannik Sinner dominating the men’s field

Jannik Sinner is having an incredible run in his first time as World No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings. Since reaching the top on June 10 last year, he has been nearly unbeatable. His winning percentage as No. 1 is the highest in ATP rankings history since 1973.

The 23-year-old has won 47 out of 50 matches, giving him a 94% win rate. He has claimed six titles in nine tournaments, including Halle, Cincinnati, the US Open, Shanghai, the Nitto ATP Finals, and the Australian Open. Only two other players, Bjorn Borg and Jimmy Connors, have won over 90% of their matches as No. 1.

Sinner’s three losses have all been in deciding sets. The lowest-ranked player to beat him as No. 1 was Andrey Rublev, then ranked No. 8, in Toronto. He has not lost a match in straight sets since his defeat to Novak Djokovic in the 2023 Nitto ATP Finals.

He has performed even better as No. 1 than before reaching the top, increasing his win percentage from 74.3% to 94%. Sinner has been No. 1 for 34 weeks and aims to stay at the top for over a year. He currently leads No. 2 Alexander Zverev by 3,695 points and will next compete at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open on February 17.
