The much-awaited 2025 Ashes is just around the corner, with hosts Australia looking to make a mark against arch-rivals England in the five Test matches. For the visitors, should they secure a win, it would mark an Ashes victory for them for the first time in almost a decade.

The oldest cricketing rivalry, the Ashes is played biennially between England and Australia since 1882. So far, the series has been played 73 times, with the Aussies having the upper edge with 34 wins, ahead of the Three Lions, who have 32 wins. Australia are the current holders, having drawn the previous five-match Test series against England 2-2 away from home back in 2023.

Meanwhile, England have not won the Ashes since 2015. The Three Lions will also be aiming to win the Ashes away from home for the first time in 15 years, as take on Australia, currently on top of the ICC Test Team Rankings. Since a team led by Andrew Strauss secured a 3-1 triumph in the 2010-11 season, England Test record Down Under has been woeful, having failed to even win a match in the country.

Unlike the 2023 Ashes, the Ben Stokes-led England side will be without two out of their star performers, bowling legends James Anderson and Stuart Broad, both of whom have already retired from the game. Australia on the other hand, will miss out on the services of the now-retired David Warner.

Schedule

The first Test will be played at the Optus Stadium in Perth, starting November 21 to November 25. Play is set to begin at 02.30 am GMT (UK standard time), as both teams are set to be greeted with a batting-friendly surface in Perth. The second Test will be played at The Gabba in Brisbane, from December 4 to December 8, with the match starting at 04.30 am GMT.

Once the first two matches get over, the action would then move to the Adelaide Oval for the third Test, starting December 17. The fourth Test match of the 2025-26 Ashes will be a ‘Boxing Day’ Test, starting December 25, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The fifth and final Test match will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground, from January 4 to January 8.

Squads

For the home side, Steve Smith has been appointed as the stand-in skipper for the opening Test, in the absence of Pat Cummins. Fast-bowling all-rounder Sean Abbott has been ruled out of the Perth Test due to a moderate-grade hamstring injury. Meanwhile, ace pacer Josh Hazlewood will be unavailable for the first match as well, with Michael Neser coming in as a replacement.

The visitors have picked a squad, similar to the one that drew the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against India, earlier this year. England have transformed into a batting-heavy side since Brendon McCullum’s appointment as head coach and the advent of ‘Baz-ball’. Mark Wood makes his return to the team, having missed out a lot of competitive action due to a knee surgery in March.

Broadcast and Live Stream

For viewers in the UK, TNT Sports will be covering the entirety of the 2025-26 Ashes, and the matches will be streamed live on their channels. TNT Sports is also offering a sport-only subscription for fans.
