The battle for the Heisman Trophy is getting heated early on this season. The top two frontrunners to win the coveted prize are Colorado Buffaloes’ Travis Hunter, who is having a phenomenal year playing wide receiver and defensive back, and Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty, who is having a historic run by rewriting records set nearly four decades ago.
Travis Hunter has begun making his case for winning the Heisman Trophy over Ashton Jeanty. The dual-position player compared himself to Jeanty on Robert Griffin III’s Outta Pocket with RGIII podcast and made his case for why he deserves to win the award. While his statement resulted in mixed reactions from fans, his competitor took his words in positive stride.
Ashton Jeanty was asked about his thoughts on Travis Hunter’s comments by YouTuber Deestroying, the running back showed respect to his competition.
His response makes it clear that Jeanty is a class act. He did not resort to diminishing the achievements of Hunter, but rather he gave him his flowers and agreed that he was entitled to his opinion.
Ashton Jeanty is hoping to beat Barry Sanders’ single-season NCAA rushing record
Jeanty is focused on breaking a record many have attempted to come close to but failed to in 36 years. He hopes to break Barry Sanders‘ single-season record of 2,628 yards set in 1988.
The other record that he is chasing is the rushing touchdown record of 37, again held by Sanders after his 1988 season. The running back won the Heisman that year for those numbers.
Ashton Jeanty is indeed chasing something special and if he can surpass Sanders, then he will be the undisputed claimant to the Heisman Trophy. Through six games, the Boise State running back has 1,248 yards and is averaging 208 yards per game.

His efficiency is shown in the 9.8 yards per carry that he is averaging. With Boise State being a contender for the Mountain West Championship Game and the College Football Playoffs, the running back has a chance at an extended season that will work in his favor.
It will be easier said than done for Jeanty. The two biggest challenges that the running back will face as the season progresses will be to stay healthy and to continue outsmarting opposing defenses.
All opposing defenses will come up with ways to neutralize or limit Jeanty’s yardage. The real question is if they can succeed in doing so or not.
