‘I will be looking for the winner of the rematch with Figueiredo and Moreno’ – Askar Askarov reveals his future fight plans
Askar Askarov is just a couple of days away from his fight against veteran flyweight Joseph Benavidez. The undefeated Russian who made his UFC debut in 2019, has quickly made a name for himself and looks all set to strike gold in the flyweight division. He is currently ranked number 3 in the flyweight division rankings.
Speaking at UFC 259 Media day, the Russian mixed martial artist who is also a freestyle wrestler, expressed his desire to take on the winner of the upcoming rematch between Deiveson Figueiredo and Brandon Moreno. He was particularly interested in taking on Brandon Moreno, since he had fought the Mexican on his UFC debut, and the match ended in a split decision draw.
‘I’m more interested to face Brandon Moreno once again‘
Askarov was quoted as saying (via his translator), “I believe I deserved the title shot even without this fight. In my first fight, in my UFC debut I fought Brandon Moreno and in that fight you know, we had the split decision draw. I believe there was a split decision draw…I’m more interested to face Brandon Moreno once again, but you know I will be looking for the winner of the rematch with Figueiredo and Moreno.” [H/T FirstSportz]
He continued, “So, if Figueiredo wins and keep the belt, I would like to fight him. If Moreno wins, I would love to fight Moreno again, but once again I want to mention when I get this belt and even if Brandon Moreno is not gonna be the champion at the time, I want him to be the number 1 contender.” [H/T FirstSportz]
Askarov has never been defeated in his MMA career. The closest he has ever come to losing was against Brandon Moreno, which is why he is insisting on a rematch with the Mexican. Do you think Askarov has the skillset to test the best of the division?
