The 2022 Commonwealth Games have seen an excellent display of power and skill over several disciplines. As athletes geared up over the last 10 days to showcase their best on the grand stage, it was not meant to be for the England women 4x400m relay team. The England Men’s 4x100m relay team was the only one to have taken a gold medal in track and field this year, despite the 4x400m team initially walking away with gold.

The fairytale performance for the quartet of Victoria Ohuruogu, Jodie Williams, Ama Pipi and Jessie Knight ended in a fantastic photo finish for the youngsters, who walked with a proud gold medal. They took victory over Canada by a thousandth of a second in a photo finish ending at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on Sunday. But the higher the rise, the bigger the fall- and unfortunately it came true for this team

While the crowd was elated and celebrating the victory of the team on its home grounds, the officials were looking at another issue all together. It was all downhill for the women from there, as they were stripped of the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. While reviewing the race footage, officials noticed a lane infringement.

Williams and Ohuruogu stepped out of their lane during the handover for the second leg. England athletics did not appeal the decision either, and the team was unfortunately stripped of their gold medal. As a result, Canada were upgraded to the gold medal, Jamaica took silver and Team Scotland won the bronze- and only disappointment for the English quartet.
